In this paper the mobile in-pit crushing system for over­ burden, which was commissioned in July 1981, at lscor's Grootegeluk Coal Mine, is described. Special reference is made to some engineering aspects of the system compo­ nents, operating practice and an economic appraisal of the system.

1. Introduction

Grootegeluk Coal Mine, near Ellisras in the Northwestern Transvaal is located on the coal bearing strata of the Water­ berg coal field and was officially opened on April 15, 1981 to produce blend coking coal for lscor's blast furnaces at Vanderbijlkpark and Newcastle.
