In this paper the mobile in-pit crushing system for over burden, which was commissioned in July 1981, at lscor's Grootegeluk Coal Mine, is described. Special reference is made to some engineering aspects of the system compo nents, operating practice and an economic appraisal of the system.

1. Introduction

Grootegeluk Coal Mine, near Ellisras in the Northwestern Transvaal is located on the coal bearing strata of the Water berg coal field and was officially opened on April 15, 1981 to produce blend coking coal for lscor's blast furnaces at Vanderbijlkpark and Newcastle.
