Inclined Bucket Elevators

Posted in: , on 20. Dec. 2012 - 12:54

Hi All,

We have inclined twin strand bucket elevators - chain on outside and 37litre buckets in between, angle is steep.

The chain (standard conveyor chain eg Renolds etc) speed is 0.418m/sec, chain pitch is 9inch, buckets on every second link, drive sprockect is 11 tooth

The theoretical 100% vol capacity is 92m3/hr.

Duty is cement clinker, <75deg C, 1.6T/m3, <50mm

We can move feed point up the upward leg if needs be, otherwise, feeds in close to tail wheel.

My Q is how can we beef up the capacity of these old elevators.....looking for a good 200tph each..

Can not find much info on inclined bucket elevators.

The drives are fitted with 37kW VVVF

What is best - bucket size, speed, continious buckets etc.

Run time will be 2000hr/pa

Thanks

James

Hello,

As you say, the present elevator has 92 cu.m/hr i.e. 92 x 1.6 = 147.2 mtph capacity. This you intend to have 200 mtph i.e. increase of 35.8%.

In such cases practical option is first to look for increase in speed. 35.8% speed increase will result into new speed of 0.418 x 1.358 = 0.568 mps i.e. 113.6 fpm. The super capacity double strand elevators with large size buckets in between, have speed around 0.6 mps i.e. 120 fpm. So it seems you can think about increase in the speed. In case you opt for this:

1) Speed increase does not increase forces or torque! So structurally and mechanically elevator can be considered safe.

2) Power will increase proportionate to the speed.

3) You have to change drive for larger kW and lesser ratio of drive.

4) Some more wear of bucket to be expected. Use superior material when replacing them later. Comparatively less increase in chain wear.

5) One can also think of compromise decision of 25% increase in speed instead of 35.8% etc.

James,

Have you considered replacing the buckets with a DSI Snake Sandwich High Angle Conveyor? Contact me if you'd like more information. We've replaced bucket elevators, drag conveyors and pocket belt conveyors.
