Hi, I am new to the industry and would like to know if there is somewhere in the net a general comparision of various types of storage solutions such as steel, concrete, dome, open and bag silos.

I am interested in

building cost

building time

cost per square meter

livetime of the various types

etc.

I understand that the cost may vary massively from country to country due to labor etc. but I am happy to receive any information to start with...

Thanks

Hi buhler,

Wie gets. By now you have learned that there are no instant answers on the internet.

An internet Forum is not the right place to ask questions about costs. There are too many variables. You need to get on the phone to an Engineering Estimator.

1 - Talk to a Steelwork Fabricator for rough costs for platework.

2 - Talk to a Construction Contractor for concrete costs.

The costs have to be broken up into

1 - Cost of supply and manufacture of materials

2 - Cost of labour to erect or construct

3 - Cost of cranes, scaffolding, lifting equipment

4 - Cost of transportation

No self-respecting experienced estimator would be prepared to give you numbers out of the air. He knows that people always remember the first number you thought of even though it may be far too low, and complain like hell, and call you a fool, if you quote a number which is foo high.

The best way to get a reasonable Order-of-Cost Estimate is to sketch up what you have in mind on paper. That means you have to put in some time thinking about the problem. State on the sketch the height, diameter, on which mountain you want it built [just guess one - like the top of the Mattenhorn], and note the nearest railway station and paved road.

Then ask a design-and-construct Contractor to give you an Order-of-Cost estimate for the project. They can give you the answer in a week. It doesn't matter if the project doesn't go ahead - but dies at the Preliminary Feasibility Study stage. Most projects do that - unless they make money sense.

Dear Buhler,

John is absolutely right. No one can or will supply this info without more specific details about your need.

You are welcome to contact me if you would like some quatations regarding erecting steel bin silos. My company has worked with silo erection for five years now, and we are now market leader inside Denmark on the field.

I would be habby to give you info about the company we usually build silos for inside Denmark. They also have an export-branch, and would be happy to meet your needs.

Kind regards

Silo Budget

Posted on 3. Jul. 2008 - 08:16

My company has built many steel grain silos (over 1 millions tons constructed over 30+ year history). We can give you a budget estimate but will need to know how many tons or bushels you want to store (the bigger the job the less expensive the ton).

Silos Prices

Posted on 2. Dec. 2008 - 10:59

Dear Sir,

I do not know if you are Buhler in Uzwill but in any case i consider that your question in good but difficult to answer because any project has his best choice for silo type

Most of the time if you have a restricted budget you will have to consider firstly the mechanical datas of soil if it is good depending the country cement will be the best solution for resistance and life time in aggressive atmosphere

Cost of civil works in seaport project can be higher than silo construction

Metallic silos (round corrugated and galva sheet or bolted flat sheet, welded, square, lipp )are the most popular and they have generally a good price, but be carefull about galvanisation or painting spec.

Also about turn over per year most of manufacter limit the number of rotations in their guaranty, check the perimeter of the ten year guaranty given by manufacturer.

Concerning Dome silos if quantity of storage is big price will be good and ground infrastructure reduced but difficult to manage and to separate type of product stored

Flat storage is also an economical solution but same than Dome silo Management is difficult and if you have a contamination of the mass consequences are costly

A price comparaison can be made using total cost per stored ton this comparaison must be made according same capacity stored I mean you can not compare 10000 mt with 50000 mt

Contact me : prodex@wanadoo.fr Lazzaroni

Finally with the reserves according project best price will be (does not means best solutions) :

Steel corrugated silos

Lipp silos

Flat silos

Square silos

Dome silos

Concrete silos

Haring Dome Structures

As an innovative family-owned engineering and technology company with 150 employees based in Pratteln, we set new standards for sustainable products and solutions in the building industry, making systematic use of renewable raw materials and energy. With our four business lines we operate internationally, and we are the undisputed market leader for load-bearing structures in Switzerland.

Haring has developed special engineering expertise and construction capabilities with the Haring Dome structures. If you are thinking of large free span structures Haring will render a professional opinion as to the feasibility of utilizing timber structure to your best advantage.

The Haring Ensphere Concept can serve the broadest range of function's. As an environmentally controlled, free spanning envelope, covering areas of up to 25000 m2, it is equally useful for

- processing plants

- bulk storage hangars

- multipurpose arenas and mega-sport centres

- cultural and institutional buildings.

Haring dome structures are strong, versatile and custom designed. Whether it's keeping the elements out or getting the largest amount of bulk in the smallest amount of space, the Haring solution has proven itself time and again.

Consider the advantages in bulk storage and material handling. Haring domes offer the ideal span-to-rise ratio in standard and custom designed configurations for any clearance requirement.

Haring domes are light weight structures but strong enough to support the suspension of concentrated equipment loads. And strong enough to withstand the winds and snow of the

harshest climates.

Haring timber construction are lightweight, corrosion resistant and maintenance free, which translates to longer life and lower costs.

Tell us your ideas. Challenge our team!

We are looking for new ways: Design in perfect harmony with nature.
