In most cases it is installed to carry the steam coal from a loading hopper outside the power plant to the stoker or stokers and dropped by graviity to the open hopper feeding the stoker- or stokers by gravity feed from above.

The bucket elevator has a diverter gate at the top of the bucket elevator to direct the flow of coal to either a pantleg bin or directly into the stoker hopper which is directly above and behind the stoker mechanism.

the ash clinker is carried away by plow or belt conveyors to a dumping hopper for disposal.

if you look at /google Riley coal stokers it will give you a good idea of the flow and elevations etc. ■
