The improvement and automation of in-house analytical procedures for the analysis of fertilisers will be discussed and the practical difficulties examined.
11:00 "Measurement of physical characteristics of fertilisers and their influence on handling and application".

The author, from a major manufacturer of fertiliser spreaders, will describe some of the tests they have developed for the physical assessment and classification of spreading characteristics of a range of fertilisers. The measurements cover the behaviour of fertilisers through the spreader, and any segregation during spreading.
11:45 "Official analytical methods and legal tolerances for fertilisers in Europe".

This paper will examine the official European methods for the analysis of fertilisers and will compare the precision of these with the legal tolerances for fertilisers in Europe. The author points out that the accuracy of the analytical methods should be refined and must be declared before infringement of tolerances can be established.

14.15 "National and European regulations for fertiliser products".

The authors will examine the history of the regulations and consider the Commission proposal for simplification. They will survey the major 'National' regulations and ask why agreement is so difficult for organic and organo-mineral fertilisers. They will question the current procedures and ask if a new type of legislation is required.
15.00 "Safety legislation and the fertiliser industry".

The author's expertise in this field will ensure a valuable paper on safety legislation relating to ammonia, nitric acid and ammonium nitrate-based fertiliser, which will touch upon urea and phosphatic fertilisers. He will cover all aspects including production, storage, transport and supply, and will address the EU ammonium nitrate directive.

Benefits of the Meeting.
This Meeting of the International Fertiliser Society will be of particular value to those responsible for the legal and safety aspects of fertiliser production, and especially to those involved in the improvement of methods of measurement. In addition a review of statutory requirements for fertiliser safety is particularly relevant at the moment.
Time is provided for the authors to address their subject in some depth, and also for delegates and speakers to discuss the issues and technicalities raised. Meetings of the Society are attended by Members and others from a wide range of disciplines and from many countries, and present an excellent opportunity to make new contacts and to renew old acquaintances. A full set of printed Proceedings is available for the Meeting, together with a delegate list.
Non-members welcome.
Non-Members are welcome as guests of the Society on payment of an additional fee of £50.00 which includes the cost of a full set of the day's Proceedings. They are of course also invited to join the Society, and full details are available from the Secretary. Membership is for a Calendar year, and the current Subscription is £65.00.
How to find the offices of COPA-COGECA.
The offices of COPA-COGECA are at 23-25 Rue de la Science, which is to the east of the Parc de Bruxelles, just outside the inner ring road. It is within reasonable walking distance of the Central Station (Gare Centrale), and near the Arts-Loi station on the Metro (both lines 1 & 2). There is a convenient train from the airport to the Central Station and of course taxis which are more expensive. Maps will be sent to all those registered for the Meeting.
