What type of level sensor are you using? The positioning of the sensor will be dependant upon what type you are using. Information on the material being stored and the means of filling would also be useful.
It is important to realise that the filling technique (pneumatic or mechanical) can have a major influence over the profile and symmetry of the top surface of the inventory - which in turn will have an influence on the positioning of whatever type of device you are using. The discharge pattern will also have an impact on the accuracy of the equipment employed on the vessel, since (depending upon the characteristics of the bulk solid) it is not unknown for a vessel operating in core (funnel) flow to cease flowing whilst level probes indicate there is still material present - as a result of the "dead zones" of material that can develop around the flanks of the vessel.

Re: Level Sensor In Hopper
Location of the level sensor would depend upon:
1.Type of the sensor you have
2.Properties of the materials being stored
3.Design of the bin/hopper (size, mass flow or funnel flow, etc.)
If you can give this information, I will be glad to help you.

Re: Level Sensor In Hopper
Hello gentlemen,
The details of my situation are as followed:
1) The material is transferred using a vacuum system.
2) The material is hygroscopic powder (@400/500 microns)
3) The hopper is a vacuum receiving cylindrical with conical bottom
4) The vacuum receiving hopper is also like a cyclone where the material is coming in tangentially at the shell side
5) Sensor used is capacitance type

Re: Level Sensor In Hopper
For humid materials capacitance type probes are not recommended because of resulting errors in measurement of the capacitance and potential build up of material on the probe's surface.
I guess that the probe is located at the bottom of the cyclone receiver to make sure that there is no build-up of the material in the receiver.
I think that a better option in this service is a vibrating type level probe.

Level Sensor
A new capacitance / RF admittance unit has been released that automaticaly adjusts for the changes mentioned. Not having all the details it is important that the measuring device extends into your vessel and that you have protection against static discharge. If you do not have a unit installed with this then the device operation would be influenced after time.
A good approach when having problems is to place the responsibility on the supplier when equipment is purchased and you will then be covered. You may contact me and I shall try to resolve.

Level sensor in hopper
Beside having the problem of product coating on the sensor giving false reading, I also like to know how the sensor should be positioned inside the hopper in order to obtain the best representation of the product level in the hopper
