Ph.D. Research Fellowship position within Powder Technology

Tel-Tek invites applicants for a Ph.D. fellowship within Powder Technology applied to offshore drill-cuttings handling process. The fellowship is a part of research project funded by Norwegian Research Council and oil industry and conducted by national and international research and academic institutes.

Ph.D. candidate will be employed in Tel-Tek and registered at Telemark University College (http://www.hit.no). The fellowship is awarded for a total of 3.5 years.

The research topic for the Ph.D. fellowship will be:

Improving Efficiency of Offshore Drill Cuttings Handling Process

Abstract:

The waste from oil drilling operations consists of the three major substances; water, residual oil and solids (rock/clay). Different solids control techniques are used to separate the solids from drilling waste and the clean mud is pumped into the borehole again. The chemically neutralized dry and partially moist particulate solids are then conveyed into intermediate storage silos and further down to sites where they are reused for land filling or as an engineering material. Rig site transfer of cuttings can be a challenge both if pneumatic conveyors or screw conveyors are used. Especially, wet powder (state between completely dry powders and cuttings slurry) is a real challenge since the particles become too sticky for easy handling or too dry for acting like slurry. Transferring and storage of drill-cuttings are crucial for oil-drilling operation and to minimise its impact on environment. Better understanding on transfer and storage processes of dry and partially-moist drill-cuttings will make a positive impact on cost effective drilling operation. It is required to improve the present transferring methods/techniques of treated drill-cuttings in order to keep the pace of drilling in oil rigs that are currently in operation and also in future designs/applications. Under the proposed project, it is aimed to conduct a detailed research study on transport properties and storage criterion of dry and partially-moist solids drill cuttings. Modelling of transfer process will be used to understand the influence of different characteristic properties of drill cuttings in their conveying modes and also to define optimum process parameters, together with quality variation of drill cuttings. On-line monitoring process of characteristic properties of drill cuttings, coupled with a reliable modelling technique can be used to optimize the performance of transfer process.

Educational Requirements

PhD admission requires a Master degree (MSc) within Process Technology/Mechanical engineering/Chemical Engineering or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale from A to E for passing grades. Excellent and documented skills in presentation and oral and written English are a prerequisite. Prior knowledge/experience in Powder Technology is an advantage.
