High Angle Conveying

Posted in: , on 13. Feb. 2007 - 00:09

We are currently designing a primary grinding section in an existing plant and due to restrictions in real estate we need to utilise an alternative to a belt conveyor. This conveyor will be positioned after the SAG oversize recirculating crusher and deliver material back on the SAG feed conveyor.

Knowns

Material - Zinc Lead Ore

Duty - 213 tph

P80 - 10mm

Max Lump Size - 12mm

Moisture - 10% (worst case)

SG of solids - 3.0

Bulk density - 2300 kg/m^3

Horizontal Distance - 25m (centre of crusher to centre of belt)

Vertical Distance - 16m (below crusher to top cover of belt)

I have read about bucket, trunk, pocket etc conveyors in the past and am aware that they are very labour intensive and have problems with spillage. Since we have 10% moisture, this problem would be severe? Are we best off utilizing a HAC conveyor in this application? What figure could we use as a rough guide for the ratio of mtce required on one of these belts compared to that of a standard belt conveyor?

Any help on this topic would be much appreciated

Dear Sir,

We can design and supply such system.

Please e-mail me your plant la-out drawings for a quote.

Conveyor belt with corrugated side walls and cleats are avilable for this type of systems. Which can handle any angle from 0 to 90 deg. and can be disigned for multiple turns in verticle plane.

Mr. Agreen,

Your requirements appear to be a perfect match for our Sandwich Belt High Angle conveyors and we have several similar installations.

I am inventor of the HAC and the DSI Snake Sandwich High Angle Conveying Systems. More important then these inventions (in the early 1980's) the writer rationalized the sandwich belt high angle conveyor technology in the conventional conveyor technology so that these systems would use (technically mature) conventional conveyor equipment and components subject to the (long proven) rules of conventional conveyor design. This objective has long been realized in many operating systems. The Dos Santos Sandwich belt systems have the same operating and maintenance characteristics as conventional conveyors. They utilize smooth surface bubber belt rhat can be continuously scraped clean. This will be extremely important in handling moist sticky material.

Please visit our website to learn more about our systems and please Email the writer with a request for quotation. We will be pleasee to quote a system to suit your specific requirements.

We are required to convey scats from the discharge screen of a Sag Mill in a new plant which processes zinc lead ore. I have read that crushed zinc lead ores can be conveyed at angles up to 18 degrees in textbooks and have commonly seen these belts operated at 15 degrees around various sites with little complication.

As the scats from a SAG mill are generally more round in shape and sometimes contain old mill balls, what angle could I use as a maximum for inclination?

Dear Sir,

Since round ball shaped material is difficult to handle even at lower angles, you can go for chevron belts or box section steep angle belts. Its a perfact solution for such products. We had supplied such belt conveyor at 70 deg for steel balls.

Mr. Green,

Our DSI Snake at Inco's Voisey's Bay is of S-Profile, operating at 90 degrees going up to the SAG mill.

Though the system was originally layed-out for a pocket belt, in the end the pocket belt was not even considered by the client.

I speak without seeing your specific SAG mill arrangement. Does the SAG oversize feed directly to the crusher or is it also lifted from the trommel oversize to the crusher feed point?

As a general concept, I believe the pocket conveyor can do it without any hickup, given that the pocket can be tensioned to restrain loose material like a glove.

There is yet another concept that I believe can also work well. In all concepts, the material must be contained in a sandwich form, but, not necessarily the HAC or SNAKE. I do not disagree with their ability to do the job. Maybe the economics might favor another concept, and use fewer components.

I did a simple analysis and find a ~700mm wide or smaller belt should do it with about 20 hp.

If you wish to explore this in concept, then email me outside the forum to my private email below.

Larry,

Is your proposed solution a secret?

Don't you want it subject to scrutiny?

Thanks for the responses.

The basic configuration is as follow

- Feed out of the SAG directed onto a single deck screen by a chute.

- Oversize solids vibrated towards a transfer chute which in turn feeds an "oversize product" conveyor.

- This conveyor then feeds a transfer/crusher tower which has three positions; 1 to feed crusher, 1 crusher bypass, 1 to stockpile/tramp iron stockpile.

- The crusher product and crusher bypass chutes feed the "crusher product" conveyor which loads the SAG Feed Conveyor and completes the recirc system. Because of real estate problems, this "crusher product" conveyor will have to a HAC/Snake conveyor as a it yields 36 deg in a straight line between the crusher chute centre and the centre of the SAG feed conveyor. Because of transition sections etc, this conveyor would be in excess of 40 deg.

The "oversize product" conveyor is where we would like to utilise a basic belt conveyor if possible. What would be max angle for the scats containing some balls etc.

Thanks

Anthony

Dear Sir,

I am interested by your project and would like to give you a positive answer right away but I'll have to look in details on the product to carry. Nevertheless, you can have a look at our website and see that we do belt conveyors in closed/sealed environements in a tube which make them stable and reliable and dust free. We do other loaders and technical assemblies. You could use a flighted belt conveyor with special cleat shapes.

Let me know if you're interested and drop your details on my email for a possible quotation. Do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards,
