Construction Safety at Work

Hi,

When working on construction projects, We have to wear the proper personal protective equipment at all times. i.e. goggles, gloves, etc.Refuse to work in unsafe conditions. Followings are some safety tips which we have to take in our mind while doing construction work.

# No one works on the sides of sloped or benched excavations above other employees unless the lower worker is protected from falling material.

# Trenches over 4 feet deep must have a safe exit such as a ramp or ladder within 25' of every worker.

# Excavated material and other objects must be kept at least 2 feet from a trench opening.

# Underground utilities must be located and marked.

# Trenches 5 feet or deeper will be inspected daily by Environmental Health & Safety.

With the proper safety training, awareness of your rights and responsibilities, and vigilance against hazardous work conditions you can reduce, if not eliminate altogether, your risk of being injured at work.

On a recent visit to an Indonesian construction camp site I noticed that the workers removed their safety boots when entering buildings to work indoors. I was accompanied by the Safety Officer who was also unconcerned about 'live' tools lying about the floors and planks overhanging stairways etc. When the mine goes into service there will no doubt be some very serious dangers. Up front the mining company is proud of its safety efforts and broadcasts the same. I consider Safety Officers who do not take safety seriously worse than no Safety Officer at all. Establishment of safety procedures is one thing, enforcement is quite another. What says the panel?

Yes, these tips are necessary, but apart from this, Safety nets are also must in construction projects as they are specially designed for the worker's safety. But, we need to consider few things before installing the safety nets for construction sites. Here are they:

1. Safety nets cannot be more than 30 feet below the working height.

2. They must be inspected for wear, damage, and other deterioration at least once a week, and after any occurrence which could affect the integrity of the system.

3. Safety nets must be installed with sufficient clearance to prevent contact with the surface or structures under them when subjected to an impact force equal to the mandated drop test.
