MECO CUSTOM-ENGINEERED SHAFT SEALS FROM WOODEX BEARING COMPANY

Woodex Bearing Company is the manufacturer of original MECO custom-engineered shaft seals for rotating processing machinery.

While pump shaft sizes are standardized, other shafts are not. For this reason, MECO has developed its original custom shaft seals for slow-turning bulk processing equipment, including mixers, blenders, conveyors, dryers, bucket elevators, grinders and agitators. MECO is the original high-runout seal for dry powder process equipment and remains the leader in the field. MECO seals provide an effective alternative to packing glands where they are not working.

Recognizing that no standard seals will work properly in every application, MECO engineers specify the design and construction materials for each seal according to precise shaft diameter, speed, clearance, process chemistry, temperature, pressure, etc. Seal materials are chosen from a variety of specialty and hardened alloys, bearing-grade plastics and specialty elastomers. FDA materials are available. Engineers use a variety of patented seal designs, selecting the optimal design to suit each application. Factors such as thermal growth of the shaft and process pressure variations are calculated in to the designs. Seals are then drawn to spec and custom-manufactured. A wide range of shaft diameters can be retrofitted.

Originally developed for screw conveyors, MECO seals solve problems caused by shaft run-out or misalignment by accommodating 6 mm TIR (diametric run-out) or more in the design of all of its seals. MECO seals are most often used to retrofit equipment where a packing gland (or stuffing box) seal has failed repeatedly due to shaft run-out. MECO seals are available either partially or fully split to speed installation, rebuilding, and in some cases, removal for daily cleaning. MECO’s split seals are famous for their “invisible part-lines”. Because of their effectiveness, MECO seals are ideally suited for applications requiring vacuum containment, often increasing machine efficiency. Seals are purged with a variety of media. Air- or gas-purged models use a very low flow rate, usually 7 +/- 7 litres per minute.

[/b]MECO Custom Shaft Seals[/b] are used worldwide in bulk materials processing applications. Industries served include chemical, food, pharmaceutical, mineral, plastics, primary metals and pulp & paper. An extensive distributor network provides hands-on support with shaft measurement, installation and rebuilding of MECO seals. MECO engineers provide telephone consultation and trouble-shooting for sealing problems of all sorts, and even make the occasional “house call” to ensure the seals’ success.

MECO seals are available factory-installed on better machinery, as retrofits through its distributor network or directly from Woodex Bearing Company. An application data webform is available on the MECO website to submit the data required for a free, specific quotation.

Woodex, a line of oil-impregnated maple bearings and wear strips, was first established in 1905. The company’s present ownership dates from 1980. In 1984, Woodex became the exclusive manufacturer and marketing agent for MECO shaft seals. While continually advancing its MECO seal product line through R & D, Woodex continues to manufacture wood bearings, on “the cutting edge of low technology”. Woodex bearings are fully-split, shimless oil-impregnated maple plane bearings for screw conveyors, roll conveyors and other equipment. The company’s facilities are located on a former poultry farm on scenic Georgetown Island, on the coast of Maine.
