Weight of the grab

Hello Sir,

In the past, four rope grabs either clamp shell or scissors type used for bulk handling (Iron ore/ coal) used to be heavy. The ratio to self weight to pay load was quite high. However now on account of advancement in technology, this ratio has come down to almost 30/70.

I would be great ful if you can tell me, does this reduction in self weight has any implications on grabing force? It is known that the grabing force on the cargo is directly proportional to the force applied on the close rope.

Regds,
