Livista Energy to Partner with Technip Energies to deliver its first Lithium Refinery in Europe

Edited by mhd on 12. Jun. 2023
Luxembourg, Luxembourg & Nanterre, FranceFollowing a competitive bidding process Livista Energy Europe (Livista) has selected Technip Energies to deliver the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) / Detailed Feasibility Study (DFS) for its first European lithium refinery in Germany to supply the rapidly growing European electric vehicle industry.

Production is forecast to begin in 2026, with 40,000 tonnes a year output – enough to supply the lithium battery requirements of approx. 850,000 electric vehicles – with the potential to double production capacity at the facility over time. Recycled feedstock is expected to reach 50% of the first plant’s capacity by 2030 and will be key to reduce the environmental impact while ramping up Europe’s energy independence and security.

Under the FEED design, Technip Energies will perform the engineering, initial procurement activities, cost estimates and all permitting work required for the construction of the first plant and the initial work for the expansion of the second plant at the same site. In addition, the preliminary assessment for a second refinery based on the first refinery design will be carried out in parallel.

Jean-Marc Ichbia, COO of Livista Energy:

"Technip Energies has a world-class reputation for delivering projects on time and on budget. Livista is looking forward to a close and fruitful collaboration that will further strengthen the authenticity of our project.

Our project will contribute and pave the way to close a critical delta in the European supply chain for electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries, as almost all lithium is refined in Asia. The ability of our advanced facilities to take recycled battery materials will also make us a key player and pioneer in the circular economy. Our goals in doing so include helping our customers directly source lithium in Europe and driving energy independence in Europe to achieve the growth targets we have set for electric vehicle production."

Marco Villa, COO of Technip Energies commented, "We are pleased to have been selected for this ambitious lithium refinery project in Germany by Livista and to support the goals and ambitions set, as part of the development of the electric vehicle industry in Europe. As we continue to expand our presence in lithium refining, we are committed to contributing to the decarbonization of the European automotive industry."

Technip Energies is a global leader in energy transition planning and technology, with 60 years of experience in planning and executing some of the world's largest projects.
