Re: Horizontal Curves
Dear Mr. Emerson,
For calculating horizontal radius in a belt conveyor, one has to see the stability of belt in varied situations. The varied situations could be steady running, starting, stoppage and again under zero capacity, partial capacity, full capacity, etc. Therefore, the combinations of all these situations would be large in number.
The belt horizontal curvature is subjected to centripetal force due to tension in belt. This tension value at curvature varies according to the aforesaid combination. The centripetal (belt tendency to shift inwards), is to be countered by forces acting in outward direction. The outward acting forces can be created by idler inclination in vertical plane, idler inclination in horizontal plane, forward tilt for one side, etc. The friction grip between belt and idlers will also help to keep the belt stable.
The above explains the general situation. Please refer to various articles etc. as mentioned by earlier respondent, for more information.
Regards,
Ishwar G Mulani.

Re: Horizontal Curves
Honorable Dr. Wohlbier:
You did not post the penultimate article of Dr. Oluf Krupfel, prior chief engineer of Beumer, before he was pummeled in the courts by certain parties, as he told me.
I met him in 1981 and was told of his story. He then published his work on the New Caledonia SLN downhill curved belt. He did all of the engieering by hand calcs. He engineered and commissioned the SLN horizontal curved conveyor by himself. Was it 1981 or 1982? My memory is 1981.
Here is a man, who won in the German courts to protect his right to practice good engineering, including horizontal curve achievements by methods as expoused by Dr./Prof. Grimmer in 1963, and high strength bucket elevators per his methods setforth in his Doctor of Engineering. ■
