Gravity conveyor to belt conveyor

Hello!

I just graduated from college, my lack experience got me some troubles in my new job, I hope someone can give me an advice, this is my first task:

My assignment is to replace a gravity conveyor that transport, for short distance, two different product (small size automobile electronic devices) that have similar characteristics, recently a new product is going to run in this same conveyor but this item is smaller than the first ones, so we have to change the gravity conveyor for a belt conveyor because the quality department suggest it and it is impossible to use the same gravity conveyor with the difference in size of the products. The products run in the same production line not at the same time, but depend of the schedule of production.

My biggest problem is that I don’t know how to begin, what are the main specifications that I have to look to make the transition?

I would have the same trouble as you even though I have designed thousands of belt conveyors.

What is a gravity conveyor? Is it an inclined chute?

To be more specific, the actual conveyor it’s an incline roller gravity conveyor, I can say that is an incline chute with rollers if I want to make a short description.

So you want a declined belt conveyor to handle unit loads rather than bulk material.

Start with the length of the conveyor you need based on your existing gravity roller unit, the physical size and weight of the units to be handled and the number of units per hour that you need to move.

Then discuss this with manufacturers specialising in unit handling belt conveyors (search this site or do a Google).

Gabylopez,

The Gravity Conveyor you described (a non-powered decline roller conveyor) is a common option for multi-level live-roller conveyor systems in Automotive, general manufacturing plants, and package handling applications. You have suggested that the roller spacing is too great to use your present system for the smaller electonic parts and that the intent is to carry both sizes of parts on the system in the future.

Depending on the size (and shape) differential, your options include the following:

(1) Retrofit your present conveyor with smaller diameter rollers that are closer together. (Remains a non-powered unit)

(2) Replace the roller conveyor with a close fitting skate conveyor system. This will be a non-powered unit.

(3) Replace the roller conveyor with a lightweight sliderbed belt conveyor system. This will be motorized.

Since you are transporting electronic devices, I presume that you are not accumulating on the lower level, as impact from a moving part to a stationary part could cause damage.

There are a number of conveyor manufacturers in North America who make all three types of these conveyors. You can locate those closest to you by doing a quick Web search.

Hope this helps.
