Honorable forum team

greetings...

we are working out with a coal storage system with a non slewing type linear stacker of 500 tph capacity. coal of -100 mm lump size shall be dumped with 40 tons dumpers from a ramp through truck tippler.

As such we have designed the system with feed hopper (approximately 100 tons) with 4 out lets. Each out let is provided with a reciprocating feeder of 15 tph. with this system ramp height is approximately 7.5 m. as of now customer is having a constraint on ramp height. I need to design the system with a reduction of atleast 1.5 m in ramp height. at the same time the hopper capacity of 100 MT to be maintained.

I would like to know from the forum that shall I extend the stacker horizontal portion below the feed hoppers with a rod gate control. also would like to know

1. Whether it is a right engineering practice.

2. Whether Stacker ( 75 kw) shall be operated with a soft starter to reduce the sudden jerk loads during startup.

request the forum to kindly advice.

thanks

I've been around quite a bit in this business and I have no shame in admitting that I haven't got a clue about what you are talking about.

Unfortunately I do not have access to the appropriate emoticon!

Hello,

Firstly, rod gate is not feeder. Rod gate is for facilitating maintenance of feeder ! Suppose hopper is filled and feeder has failed, and it needs to be removed for repairing or replacement. What to do ? So, to facilitate such maintenance, rod gates are provided. Its functional aspects are known at hundreds of coal handling plants in India, since decades. The rods are inserted across flow opening to hold the material. The rod gates can be used for materials which are lumpy or large size granules which will bridge on rods and material will not rush down (there could be some dribble). Rod gates are not suitable for grain type materials (wheat, rice , etc.). Slide gates are used to block / hold grain type material, because slide gate can pierce through grain.

Secondly word / name rod gate itself is self deceiving, as if it is like flap gate, rake and pinion operated slide gate, screw operated slide gate, sector gate and so on. Its work representative name can be ‘rod barrier’. Using this item as substitute of feeder is too much. Rod gate is very useful item as rod barrier.

Regarding total vertical depth for system, it is matter of design engineering and drawing, and manage accordingly.

If you just want to reduce ramp depth by 1.5 m, then install your outgoing conveyor just by 1.5 m or even 2.5 m below ground. This will result into very substantial saving in civil work cost for ramp along with approach roads. The extra cost for installing the conveyor below ground by 2 m for 40 to 50 metre length will not be so high. The below ground civil structure volume will be just around 500 cubic metre. Let the concerned civil engineers make cost comparative data, extra cost versus saving. Water level, etc. aspects get accounted in civil cost. Civil structures are built underground and even below sea. So, 2 m below dry ground surface cannot be an engineering obstacle.

Dear Pappu, Just go for one steel platform together with hopper+ feeder . The truck will parked on steel platform and unload the material on the hopper (specially design to take material from the dump truck). The other end of the feeder shall convey the coal directly over the radial stacker feed conveyor. When you have dump trucks there is no need of truck tippler.

Total cost shall be between 45-50 lacs and the entire assembly is shift able.

Cheers
