Spherical Roller Bearing Replacement

Spherical roller bearing replacement by split bearing ?

Dear Experts,

Recently, we changed the bearing of bucket wheel side in the reclaimer bucket wheel drive system.

The bearing's specification is 24052 CC ( Double row straight bore spherical roller bearing ). Replacement is a very laborious process, in bucket wheel shaft. Is it possible to replace this bearing, by split bearing? Have you ever changed such sizes of bearing by split bearing?. Request to kindly post your opinion and link.

Thanks & Regards,

Splitting Hairs.

Changing a bucket wheel shaft bearing was never meant to be easy.

What was the life achieved by the solid bearing? Based on this lifespan the number of bearing changes can be indicated. Examine the cost of replacing the more expensive item over the predicted life of the reclaimer. That's it: assuming there is a split bearing available. If the life of the split bearing turns out to be less than the original solid bearing then you might be embarrassed depending on the frequency of replacement.

Why isn't there a 24052 CC bearing available in the original spares list? If the original lasted long enough you can't just bin a brand new bearing on the basis of installation effort. If your maintenance boys are complaining about their tea getting cold it is not a fitting reason.

Thank you Mr.John Gateley,

I 100% agree with your view. But as I did not have answers for the questions you have put-up, I have raised this query.

Split bearings replacement may take very less time. But I need more data ( as you have suggested ) and views of experts, to decide the strategy.

Regards,

Contact Cooper Bearings - they are probably the world leader in split bearing technology. But they will also be the first to admit that the split bearing will have a reduced load capacity than that of the equivalent size solid bearing. From what I can tell the largest split roller bearing they manufacture is a 180 mm where you need a 260 mm.

So my feeling is you will not find one available to be a reasonable replacement for your existing bearing. Split bearing installations typically need to be designed from the beginning so that the bearing load capacity meets the load requirements which typically is a larger bearing that that required for a solid bearing.
