How to Build Steel Silos

Posted in: , on 28. Dec. 2008 - 17:22

My name is Gustavo Sosa. I am a Mechanical Engineer (located in Montevideo, Uruguay, South America) and I want to learn how to build metal silos, and how to install bucket elevators, belt conveyors, etc.

My family's company (RONTIL S.A.) is specialized in agricultural equipment and bulk material handling and our sales have been growing at amazing rates over the last years. However, we have experienced serious problems in our last project because of the contractor we hired. We knew he meant trouble, but he was the only one available. Currently we have other two projects to quote and there isn't a single one building company available.

So, I want to learn how to install grain storage and processing facilities to take care of this myself. I wonder if there is any company where I might get a temporary job to learn the trade.

Later we may be business partners in the Mercosur area (Argentina, Uruguay, Brasil, Paraguay).

Hello Gustavo Sosa:

I could possibly find a US contractor for you to be temporarily employed, but learing millwright construction isn't something you do for a few weeks and are an expert ready to run a construction company. There are four important aspects: 1-quality equipment, 2-proper design of facility, 3-good millwright installation, and 4-commissioning of equipment.

I have 25 years experience with the design, specifications of equipment, construction, and commissioning of commercial grain handling, animal feed manufacturing, and seed conditioning facilities. I am willing to travel to S.A. as a consultant to assist with the training of construction of these types of facilities. I also have an extensive library of related manuals of the installation of grain silos, bucket elevators, conveyors, etc.

If you are interested in an arrangement, I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello Gustavo,

I'm curious if you received the Silo erection experience you were looking for? Who was it with and how did you go?

Hi

I think that you should look at what your line of business will be - you can not do everything.

Based on your list - I would suggest that you talk to cement companies for their projects (if any) - as they will have all of these....try to get on site for the erection phase.

You could also try consultants eg Aurecon (formerly Connell Wagner et al) are well renowned in Australia for cement plants engineer.

As a starter - I would try to get hold of technical specifications - for supply and for erection.

Steel bins are typically dimensioned for road transport to site. Usually the outlet cone and support/ring beam are made in the fabrication workshop for site erection. This is lifted up in one piece onto the steelworks - it will be typicaly that internal access is needed to do the site weld at the butt joint. The upper parts of the bin are welded on site and then lifted up as one unit on top of the cone/ring beam. This means one site up in place butt weld - located about 1m above the support steel level.

If you bins are not very big - they are transported to site in 1 piece and lifted accordingly.

In all cases, a crane/lift study is done and it is typical that erection/lifting lugs are welded to the sections for site erection - these are typically left in place.

It is important to remember for all erection - that you work on centrelines - this is your key reference, where required, use offsets.

For conveyors - establish centreline marks past the head and tail pulleys as they will be used to help align your pulleys.

Elevators are simple - important part is the drive/tail alignments.

As part of the site works - scheduling and resourcing will be key - need to get gear in with the cranes and avoid dragging/hand rigging gear into place ie so gear has to arrive on site in time to get erected in proper sequence.

If you are selecting site contractors - you need to look at their key resouces (and not their logo) that they promise to put onto your job - there is no subsitute for experience. If you do not have much choice, then press them for getting in a good sub contractor erection specialists.

I do not know your business but would say that only do what you are good at and get others who are good at other things doing these other things.

Cheers

James
