Design of Silos

Hi everyone out there. Iam a mechanical engineer in search of some technical data on how to design silos for storage of plastic granules. Capacity of silos should be 10 tonnes, also I would like to get your precious views and guidance as this is going to be my first silo (Bin). Is there any site where I can get all the details? Also I would like to know what all stresses apart from Hoop stress which we might encounter in the Silo.

Please go to the eLibrary on The Powder/Bulk Portal and search for silos or silo desgin etc. and you will find dozens of excellent technical articles which will help you get acquainted with this technology.

Please help me in designing an Aluminium Silo of 8 mtrs height and 1.5 mtrs dia this will be used to store Plastic granules. ■

Dear Shri Keshav Dimri,

Silo design is a serious subject with lot of literature about the same. However, the silo you are referring is just 1.5 m diameter and 8 m tall and so structural design engineer with certain exposure to the subject may be able to do the design.

Dear Keshav,

The process design for reliable gravity/gravity assisted flow from silos requires an evaluation of flow characteristics of the plastic granules under consideration.

Kindly let me know the particle size range, bulk density of the granules, rate of extraction required from the proposed silo.

This initial information allows us to determine whether Shear Tests are required to be carried out. For this purpose, computerised Jenike-Schulze Ring Shear Tester, Jenike Flow Factor Tester are available in Hyderabad, India.

If you agree, then I can help you in establishing proper silo configuraton (within the layout of Height: 8 m, Dia.1.5 m) for reliable flow of the plastic granules.
