Sandwich idler roller for pipe conveyor

Normally every pipe conveyor is the tendency to fold after particular working time period. During the belt running these folding will hinder the operation of conveying material for more then 3 days. There are certain cases where conveyor stoppages may extend to one week also, due to belt folding passed up to hexagonal cross section of idlers. Which happened even after the installation of the belt sway and rip detection .

Belt sandwich Idler will help to avoid the conveyor folding and immediate stoppage of the conveyor to avoid belt folding at the tail end.

I have developed and designed this device which helps practically and proven .

Case -1

SEIL has a 5 km long single pipe conveyor which conveys coal from KP Port to SEIL plant and any outage of this conveyor leads to stoppage of coal unloading operation and also such delays leads to penal berth charges and vessel demurrage.

Pipe conveyor belt folding was observed during the pipe conveyor operation at the tail pulley portion and after getting folded the belt travelled over the tail end pulley for a length of 200 meters. To remove the belt fold, the complete conveyor take-up system has to be released and at a time only 20 meters of the belt can be unfolded which took nearly 30 hours for unfolding and normalizing the system.

To avoid belt folding and long outage of pipe conveyor, spring loaded sandwich idler rollers were manufactured in-house and installed along with limit switch and interlocked with Pipe Conveyor trip logic.

This can be provided with Min 4 roller sets without limit switch will workout for restrict belt flapping

These rollers are twin sandwich rollers and the top roller is suspended on two springs along with limit switch provision. The pipe conveyor belt passes in-between these sandwich rollers and whenever the belt starts folding due to sway or any other reason the spring suspended roller lifts up and triggers the limit switch, which in turn trips the pipe conveyor to avoid further folding of the belt.

Potential Gain

Prevents belt from folding by guiding the belt while it passes between them.

If for any reason the belt tries to fold, this mechanism trips the system and prevents damage to the conveyor belt.

Has helped to prevent long conveyor outages.

Has helped in reducing penal berth charges and demurrage charges due to belt folding.
