Silo Needed for Biomass Plant

Silo needed for biomass cogen plant

We need to build a new silo for our biomass cogen project.

We have considered Jeffrey Rader for the reclaimer of the circular bin.

Our question is: would a grain silo construction which is quite typical here in Uruguay be suitable as a container or would we have problems with bridging, overpressures, etc?

The size of our silo is 3000 CBM abt 90000cft.

Thanks,

Gustavo

Hello Gustavo,

wood flows bad, it likes to make bridges, no cone on the outlet, ... it is better to ask an expierienced silo constructor ... consider you may need an minimum silo diameter and a good discharge/feed machine ... wood changes density and volume with changes of moisture ... the light grain silos may not mangae it

Usually the silos are with plain walls ...

I suggest to check the form I send you and let us think about sizes and designs

Yes you can have a bottom cone, provided that you have a suitable bin discharger at the cone outlet.

Silo Construction Thorwesten (Tv Or Sit)

Posted on 12. Jun. 2009 - 05:10

Hello,

EXCON represents the german company Thorwesten

with wide experience in

silos (SIT - SiloBau Thorwesten) and

also explosion-proof silos (TV - Thorwesten Vent)

You can ask for the silo (hard ware) or only for the engineering

Consider that TV designed silos with an sweeping auger discharge which can be explosion-proof if needed,

silo with flat bottom !!!!!!!!!

Just check for a few pictures and let me contact you to the next TV- or SIT-contact

The first question is what biomass are you intending to store, not all biomass is the same.

Then you need to test the flow properties of the biomass which can be used as the design basis for a silo.

This may indicate that a grain construction could be used, but the problem is that grain flows from a silo in a predictable manner, biomass doesn't. You may need a discharger and the characteristics of the biomass flow in the silo with a particular discharger may be the deciding factor.

Why not use a rectangular bunker with an hydraulic discharge ?

The storage can be in a rectangular enclosure with an hydraulic discharge. 500 to 600cu.m is common ie 6m wide X 5mHigh X 15m to 20m long but larger can be done.

As previous persons said it depends what kind of biomass and parameters of material you are going to store. If it will be wet wood chips you have to be carefull of water in winter time, resin etc. For this material we recommend flat bottom. You can also use walking floor. We have provided e.g. storage with intelligent overhead crane which not allow to heat alternative fuels. It depends how long biomass will stay in storage if it will be more than 7-14 days you have to be careful of fermentation of material.

For dry biomass as pellets etc. you can use wider cone with screw conveyors.

Please be mind of ATEX zones also.

Biomass Silo

Dear Gustavo,

we can supply the silos you need as we have done already with other thermal plants in Uruguay. Please visit the site: www.dujua.com.br and let us know your needs. We shall be pleased to quote the silos and conveyors most suitable for your fuel. We highly recommend to do not use grain storage silos for non flowing materials such as wood chips. A screw conveyor moving back and forth in a horizontal silo will suit perfectly well the 3000m3 capacity.

Kind regards,

Walter
