Flow characteristics and filling of kaliumnitrate (saltpeter)

Posted in: , on 2. Dec. 2008 - 17:50

I'm dealing with the layout of a filling line to package several powdry products among which is kaliumnitrate, also known as

saltpeter. Fillling weights are between 15 and 50 kgs.

Although asking some filling equipment manufacturers I could provide neither informations about the kind of bag filling machines optimal useful for this product nor figures on the flow characteristics of it.

Can anybody help ?

Many thanks in advance.

simply looking for the UN chemical characteristics of these solids is easy enough or any chemistry book discussing powdered materials or the library.

Not knowing what your desired method of filling is a problem and the desired type of bag is the another, the desired production rate is another problem; so I understand fully why they have not been forth coming with any information.

Gravity filled open mouth bags with a clamp bagging system and sewing machines is one way, valve pack bags filled with a compressed air blast is another, form, fill and seal is yet another another.

The valve pack and form fill and seal plastic bags are very costly and the plastic is very difficult to recycle where as a very heavy paper walled bag is easy to recycle and the sewn bag installation is simpler and less costly

Small volume fillings per bag are done with open mouth bags from an over head bin and in combination with an air powered clamp bagger and then either sewn or glued with a folded flap over the other flap to seal it like a ten pound bag of sugar.

Unless you provide them with more information it is not going to happen!

Thank you very much, Izaharis. Sometimes also stupid questions create answers that make sense.
