Air Control Unit Analysis

Normally we build an ACU (air control unit) with a sonic nozzle if we have a 6 Barg air supply and less than 3 bar conveying pressure drop.

With that device we can only take 1/2 of the energy from the compressed air.

Now if we have a 3.5 Bar compressed air and we need 3 bar for conveying, how can I do?

May I connect a flow transmitter with a 0.04 Bar pressure drop upstream and then a control valve and a PI controller to make that?

Did anybody try this configuration before?

If you want to use a 3.5 barg compressor then you don't need flow control just size the compressor at the maximum required flow. If you required the 100% flow all the time then it is simple nothing is needed. It will have to be a dedicated compressor and will not be easy to split the airflows. Only problem will be in case of line blockage the pressure will peak at 3.5 barg before the relief valve will kick in or the compressor will trip. Make sure your system is rated to take this pressure or add an additional relief valve at 3 barg.

Dear Shenjie2004,

I have seen a system with a high pressure compressor, feeding 3 pneumatic conveying systems, using 3 pneumatic flow control valves, working fully autonomous in the 3 pipelines.

Measuring a pressure drop in the flow upstream and controlling a regulating valve.

What you suggest must be possible, although I did not find it on the web.

Consult a company like Atlas Copco or others.

However, for 1 pneumatic conveying system, it makes no sense to compress to 3.5 bar and then use this device.

Then Mr Mantoo’s common sense suggestion is the way to go.

When you have multiple installations running at the same time, which are getting their air from a common network it MIGHT be a possibility.

Have a nice day
