Re: Big Bags

Material compaction in Bulk Bags can be a big issue. Bouncing during truck shipping compresses the material on the bottom of the bag, and if the bags are stacked the entire lower bag is compressed.

Many of the bag frame discharger manufacturers offer mechanical massaging to the bottom of the bag to promote flow. However if the compaction is severe a lumpbreaker may be required to condition the material.

We have worked with some of the big spice manufacturers, and they have used portable cone-valve bins (IBC’s) to ship material to their customers with good success. The stainless steel bins are stackable, and the rigid design prevents compression from above. The cone valve discharge does a good job of breaking compacted material and enhancing flow, while a cone vibrator helps condition the material. We specify IBC’s from Matcon www.matcon-cone.com but there are other suppliers.

If you would like additional recommendations from a company not directly involved with selling bag frames or IBC’s please forward me an email.
