Dear Manufacturer,

The picture looks as a modern, well designed screw feeder, which certainly will be a step forward compared to the existing designs.

One of the claimed benefits is “include increased conveying rates with less air”.

I wonder how that is possible.

This would mean that the pipe diameter can also be reduced in diameter in order to maintain the required air velocity.

For the same capacity, this would require an increased pressure.

On the website I learn “Low conveying pressure -4 to 12 PSI”

The screw feeder feeds the material into a pneumatic conveying line and does not even know that.

The pneumatic conveying design is 100% uncoupled from the feeder design.

I am very interested to learn how a feeder can reduce the the air and pressure requirement (energy requirement) of a pneumatic system (unless it uses the convey air for feeding purposes).

If I am wrong in my perception, I apologize at forehand.

Maybe it forms a perfect seal and there is no air loss into the feeding hopper. This will result in less total air requirement.

As far as pressure is concerned I think an explanation will enlighten us all.

Dear Mr Mantoo,

I worked with FK pumps in 1994 and they already had a perfect seal.

Suppose the seal was not perfect then there would be air blowing back into the screw barrel in the opposite direction of the material flow of the seal.

That would destroy the seal completely and also would prevent new material to be picked up by the screw and the material flow would stop.

The non return valve at the end of the barrel then will close and the air back flow will stop and then the whole procedure starts again.

Injecting air before the screw is a way to control the feeding rate between certain values.

If air is blowing back, then the feeding rate would decrease at higher pressures but in fact a screw will stall when the pressure becomes too high.

Internal material stress calculations in the plug will confirm this behaviour.

Indeed, an explanation will enlighten us all.
