Largest Mobile Harbour Crane in Portugal Goes into Service –

Gottwald Generation 5 Crane for Agribulk and Project Cargo

Düsseldorf (Germany), 10 March 2008 – Terminal operator Socarpor in the Port of Aveiro, Portugal, has recently commissioned one G HMK 7408 B and one HMK 170 E Mobile Harbour Crane from Gottwald Port Technology GmbH (Gottwald) to increase terminal capacities in handling bulk, project and general cargo.

The new G HMK 7408 B four-rope grab Mobile Harbour Crane is the most powerful Mobile Harbour Crane in Portugal and at the same time the first Mobile Harbour Crane of the new Generation 5 series, successfully launched by Gottwald in the spring of 2006, to go into service in Portugal. The primary job of this dedicated bulk crane, offering a 50-tonne grab curve and classified for continuous-duty grab operation under rough conditions, will be grain handling. In addition, its maximum lifting capacity of 120 tonnes makes it ideal for handling project cargo, a growing segment in the Port of Aveiro and beyond. The HMK 170 E Mobile Harbour Crane with a capacity of 63 tonnes will be used as multipurpose crane for handling general cargo and bulk materials with motor grab.

Socarpor, which is part of the Mota-Engil Group one of the biggest Portugese economical groups – and the largest terminal operator in the Port of Aveiro with an annual throughput of approximately 1.4 million tonnes, is a long-time Gottwald customer. Since 2001, Socarpor has been operating a Gottwald HMK 170 E Mobile Harbour Crane for handling general cargo and bulk materials such as sand or clay. The two new cranes were purchased as part of a huge investment programme which also includes a new grain terminal currently under construction.

“We are proud to be the first terminal in Portugal to operate a Generation 5 crane, which is, at the same time, the largest crane in Portugal,“ says Lopo de Castro Feijo, President Socarpor. “We were particularly impressed by how soon after ordering we were able to put the new G HMK 7408 B into service.” The crane was delivered on 5 December 2007 and put into commercial operation only 16 days later, on 21 December 2007. And according to de Castro Feijo, after the first operating experience, the terminal’s expectations regarding the reliability and handling performance of the G HMK 7408 B crane have been completely met.

”With a 50-tonne grab curve and handling rates of up to 1,300 tph we guarantee our customers the shortest processing and thus minimum ship berthing times,” says de Castro Feijo. “Furthermore, to allow us to handle also project cargo, which becomes an increasingly important field of activity in our terminal, Gottwald has tailored the crane to our requirements, making it possible now to lift 120 tonnes in heavy load. And following the positive experience with our existing HMK 170 E Mobile Harbour Crane, it was easy to make the decision to invest in an additional HMK 170 E. It ensures the flexibility and versatility we need for handling a variety of general and bulk cargo in our multipurpose terminal. With Gottwald we are optimally equipped for the future and we look forward to implement Gottwald’s equipment also in upcoming terminal expansions.”

With the award of this contract, Gottwald Mobile Harbour Cranes now number 18 in Portugal. Andreas Czwalinna, Regional Sales Manager, has several reasons to be pleased about the new order: "With the order from Scoarpor, not only were we able to strengthen our position in Portugal, which is an important market for us. This order shows that our Generation 5, which has already enjoyed a very positive response from many customers worldwide, is also a success in Portugal. Last but not least, this order is another confirmation of port and terminal operators’ confidence in Gottwald’s Mobile Harbour Cranes for handling agribulk, a segment, which is gaining in importance to our company.”
