AUSTRALIAN PORT AUTHORITY EXPANDS WITH ALIMAK

The recently renamed Central Queensland Port Authority in Port Gladstone, Australia has announced further expansion. With five Alimak industrial lifts already operating in the port’s RG Tanna Coal Terminal – including the first recently installed new generation SE 1200 FC - Alimak Australia has already received confirmation of an order for a further SE 1200 FC.

Previously called the Gladstone Port Authority, the change of name was announced last year, amalgamating the Port Authorities of Gladstone and Rockhampton.

The Port of Gladstone is located 525 km north of Brisbane and is recognised as one of the world’s top five coal export ports and the third largest in Australia handling 18% of Australia’s coal export to more than 20 countries worldwide. The port handles coal from more than 10 mines located in the southern Bowen Basin; almost 200 km west of Gladstone. It is also Queensland’s largest multi-commodity port.

To date five Alimak lifts have been installed at the coal terminal providing access to coal conveyor towers for maintenance and operational purposes.

The first unit with a 600 kg capacity was installed in 1990. Subsequent expansions saw three Alimak 1200’s installed and the first SE1200FC last year.

Featuring a 1200 kg capacity, the latest unit has a travel height of 35 m.

The Port opted for Alimak industrial lifts for their record of reliability, performance and ease of installation. Using rack and pinion techniques eliminates the need for a costly conventional lift shaft.

The lift cars fabricated in stainless steel makes them eminently suited for outdoor installation at Gladstone which experiences an extremely corrosive environment being close to both the sea and coal stockpiles.

The most recent expansion completed last year included a new stockpile , a third wharf increasing coal export capacity from 30 Mt to 40 Mt/yr and upgraded its nominal rail unloading rate from 4000 t/hr to 6000 t/hr.

The latest announcement, scheduled for completion by 2007 will include a third rail unloading station, a third shiploader, a fourth berth and two additional stockpiles taking the terminal’s total capacity to 65 Mt/yr.

Some 400 km north of Gladstone, Dalryimple Bay Coal Terminal close to Mackay handles coal exports from mines in the northern Bowen Basin. The terminal operators are also relying on Alimak industrial lifts for access duties with two SE7’s installed five years ago.
