Biomass - Cassava Chips Properties

Good day,

Would anyone have data relating to the physical properties of cassava chips / residues?

I am working on a small project for a client who currently co-fires wood chips (approx. 5% of total heat input) in their CFB boilers and is considering using cassava instead of / in addition to the wood chips. The client cannot provide me with any data regarding the material properties.

Of particular interest is the typical moisture content and heating value.

Any inputs would be appreciated.

With best regards,

Jack

Dear Jack,

In 1978 to 1979, I did a tapioca pelletizing project in Thailand and I remember that the moisture content is approx. 14% by weight.

As far as I remember, this moisture content of 14% is the basis of the agreed purchase price of the tapioca (or cassava).I suppose that the cassava can be dried further.

The tapioca was transshipped to Europe as an ingredient for cattle feed.

The cassava root is mainly starch and it should be possible for you to figure out the energy that is released by burning the chips.

Does this help a bit?

Have a nice day

Teus

Hi Teus,

Thanks for taking the time to respond. That's useful information. As it happens this project is also based in Thailand (happy coincidence). The moisture is more or less in the same range as the coal so that further drying is not a real problem. I need to see whether the system currently in use for handling the woodchips would more or less have the required capacity if cassava were to be used instead, thus the need to know the heating value. Of course it is mainly starch and this would be a good starting point.

With best regards,

Jack
