Eurasia – MENA Steel Summit

22-23 January 2013 Istanbul / TURKEY

ONLY GOING TO ONE STEEL SUMMIT THIS YEAR?. MAKE IT THIS ONE

EBY Summits is pleased to announce the Eurasia – MENA Steel Summit (Annual Regional Iron & Steel Investment Summit)

The Summit offers a unique opportunity to meet and network with the influential decision makers and offers huge opportunities to invest/trade within this growing sector.

THE SUMMIT

With some slowdown compared to 2010, growth in the world steel industry in 2011 was 7 %, in which global financial crisis losses were compensated. It was observed that in contrast to the previous years, the China effect continued to weaken in the world steel production rise. After systematically growing by around 20 % annually in 2000’s, Chinese steel industry growth leveled off to around 9-10 % during the last 2 years. While the production of Japan and Spain dropped, production growth of the USA, India, Russia, Germany, Ukraine, Brazil and France stayed below the world average. Compared to the 2010, world crude steel production growth slowed down sharply to 7 % from 15 %. However, Turkey’s production succeeded to grow further by 2 percentage points to 17 %. With this growth rate, which is around twice as high as Turkey’s economic growth, Turkish steel industry was at top of the large steel producing countries in terms of production increase.

In addition to the 14 % finished steel consumption growth, especially 5 % drop in total steel import contributed to the high performance of Turkey’s steel production rise. The drop in imports is mainly resulted from semis and flat products. However, it has been observed that the falling rate in imports has not fully reflected the expansion rate in Turkey’s steel production capacity and thus Turkish steel producers are obliged to channel their higher production to the export markets, especially in flat steel products. Because of that, Turkey’s flat steel export rose by around 70 % to 2.4 million tons.

As a whole, in 2011 Turkey’s steel export is expected to grow by around 6 % to 19 million tones, in terms of tonnage and by 25 % to 17 billion USD in terms of value. The difference between the growth rates of tonnage and value shows that the general price levels increased by around 18 % compared to 2010 levels. While steel export value that Turkey has reached is satisfactory, export growth in terms of tonnage has been lower than the expectations due to the uncertainties and instabilities in some Middle East, Gulf and North African countries. Steel industry compensated the export losses in the Middle East and North Africa by focusing on the alternative markets such as EU, South America and Far East markets. Turkey’s steel consumption and export growth, together with the moderate import drop allowed Turkish steel industry to increase its production and capacity utilization rate.

It is anticipated that the uncertainties regarding the slowdown in the developed economies will continue especially during the first half of 2012 and thus Turkish steel industry might have difficulty in keeping the current export tonnage levels to the EU markets. However, steel export to the developing countries is expected to continue growing. Establishing stability in the Middle East, Gulf Countries, North Africa and neighboring countries will have a crucial role in Turkey’s steel export recovery.

In general, it is expected that Turkey’s crude steel production will grow by 10 % and export by around 7 % in 2012. Depending on the performance of the domestic steel consumption and stability in the export markets, Turkish steel industry has the potential to increase its production above the expectations, considering the new capacities coming on stream.
