The requirements on the transport of bulk material in processing installations are broad and can be normally matched with conventional belt or screw conveyors. If the products to be transported are sensible or longer dis-tances have to be covered, sometimes other transport equipment has to be considered.

The German based company Klann Industrieanlagen is offering for the transport and dosing of bulk material an extraordinary conveyor system. This system is based on a travelling hoist gear, in which the bulk material is carried in a bucket in a vertical and horizontal way. Due to the low space requirement the system can be easily fitted in existing installations where conventional conveying systems can not be operated.

In comparison with conventional conveying systems like belt, screw, plate or pneumatic conveyors, the travel-ling hoist gear has the following advantages:

• No demixing of the bulk material during transport

• No grain destruction and dust production by mechanical stress during transport

• Minimization of air contact to avoid chemical reaction with sensible material

• Avoidance of material compaction

• Minimum space requirement for installation

• Batch transport to assure uniform transport times

As the system can transport material in a horizontal and vertical way without the need to transfer the material, it can be used for various applications.

Design

As base unit a travelling hoist gear (crab) with an electrical drive is used, which is combined with an additional chain hoist in case vertical transport is needed as well. On this hoist a bucket for the material transport is fixed.

The feed of the bulk material into the bucket is done from upside and the discharge either with a flap on the bottom of the bucket or by tilting the bucket.

A simple mechanical locking avoids an early discharge of the material.

The use of standard equipment of the DEMAG crane product program assures a simple and cost effective de-sign and easy maintenance of the hoist system.

Typical technical data of the hoist transport system are:

Transport volume:5 – 200 Litre

Travelling speed:max. 40 m/min.

Capacity:0.2 – 3 m/hr.

Application Example

In an industrial process additives have to be added into a reactor in form of bulk material. As the reactor level is at a height of 5 m and the feed of the additives was not considered during commissioning, the necessary stor-age, dosing and transport equipment has to be installed additionally.

So far the feed of the material into a small dosing bin was conducted by hand carried 20 kg sacks on the reactor level. Due to the complicated and work intensive handling of sacks on palettes, the material shall be purchased in big-bags and discharged on the floor level. The product characteristics didn’t allow the use of pneumatic transport, so that different transport concepts were discussed.

The KHP hoist gear transport system was chosen, due to the limited space requirement and its high feasibility. The material is now charged directly from an easily accessible big-bag discharge installation on the floor level into the bucket of the hoist system and transported in a vertical and horizontal way into a dosing bin on the re-actor level.

The hoist track could easily fixed on the existing steel construction without limiting the access to other equip-ment. Due to the fully automated operation of the installation the investment was paid back within a short period of time by the savings in logistic and handling costs.

The KHP travelling hoist system has shown already it’s reliability in a wide range of applications in several in-stallations. Typical applications are the transport of smaller quantities of bulk material like amendments over longer distances in existing installations. A distribution of the material to different consumer points is easily pos-sible.
