Pectines are an important gelling agent in food items such as marmalade, sweets, mayonnaise and diet products. Extreme safety measures are required during the production of these soluble polymers, since they are in powder form, and as such can cause an explosive at the right circumstances. Since July 1, 2003 machines utilized in this type of production environment have to comply with the European ATEX-Explosionsschutzrichtlinie 94/9/EG.

"In an explosion prone environment static electricity and other sources of sparks have to be eliminated"; according to the CEO of metal detector manufacturer MESUTRONIC Gerätebau GmbH (Kirchberg im Wald). The world leading Pectin manufacturer CP Kelco, from the Danish city of Lille Skensved, relies on the Metal separator system "QUICKTRON 02 A 100 ex" from MESUTRONIC.

The food ingredient "Pectin" under the close scrutiny of Metal separators

Pectin is the general term for a group of soluble polymers. It is classified under the E-number 440 as an additive ( jelling and thickening) agent. CP Kelco uses the residual of citric fruits after the juice and oil press as a natural raw ingredient. The Pectin is leached from the cells of the fruits in three to four steps by means of heat and slightly acidic water.

One of the most important CP Kelco-Products ist GENU®pectin with its natural stabiliser properties, which are used in the manufacturing of Juices, Milk and Joghurt drinks. Pectines are also used in the industrial manufacturing of sweets, mayonnaise, dairy products and low calory foods. Housewifes use Pectin mostly during canning of marmelades or jellies. It is an ingredient in jellied sugars, cake frosting and pudding powder. Pectin is also used as a stabilizer in drinks and ice cream.

CP Kelco, with its headquarters in Chicago, USA and Lille Skensved, Denmark is one of the world leading manufacturers and distributors of structural and stabilizing ingredients for the Food Industry 95 % of the yearly production is destined for export to 2,500 customers in 100 countries.

Worldwide sales of 450 Mio $ ( 350 Mio Euros ) are accomplished by the 1,720 employees of CP Kelco. Seven metal separator systems "QUICKTRON 02 A 100 ex" from MESUTRONIC Gerätebau GmbH (Kirchberg/Wald) are on duty in the factory of CP Kelco ApS in Lille Skensved, 40 Kilometers south of the danish Kapital Copenhagen.

MESUTRONIC offers industrial metal search technology worldwide and the 50 employees achieved in excess of 5 Mio euros gross sales in 2003. MESUTRONIC achieves a third of sales with metal detection technology for the food industry. CP Kelco elaborates Pectin extracts into powders by means of spray and roller drying.

The product is examined in free fall by highly sensitive metal separators before entering the mills. The throughput is up to 27,000 liters/hour. The separators detect metallic contaminants from 0.6mm diameter on up. All detectors are linked by the Mesutronic Network. The centrally located control station receives important data and parameters from the separators. The data is clearly displayed on a PC and can be monitored and modified as required.

Protection of machinery and prevention of explosions are top priorities for metal detection. Metallic contaminants can damage the mill's knives or create sparks when contacting other metals. Monitoring by means of metal separators protects not only against loss of production and expensive repairs, but also against dangerous explosions caused by sparking metal contaminants.

Zone 20 in the pneumatic conveying pipe

Milling of Pectin can create an explosive dust. Sparks and static electricity can create an explosion. The QUICKTRON-Special version assures that no sparks are created in an explosion prone environment.

Mesutronic units with the "Zone 20" comply with the highest explosion proof requirements in pneumatic conveying pipes. Units in the less explosive environment near machines are designed as "Zone 22".

Another classification criteria is ignition temperature. Permissible surface temperatures of metal separator components such as bearings, pneumatic cylinders and electronics cabinets, which may come in contact with Pectin sugar dust, are not exceeded during operation or even during a malfunction. Overheating of cabinets or pneumatic cylinders is not possible, even under adverse conditions. The metal separator is designed in such a manner as to exclude dangerous electromagnetic wave emissions.

Contaminants change the Product

Clean Pectin, without metal contaminants, passes without restricitions thru the reject flap and is bagged. All metal contaminants in the product change the high frequency field of the search coil. All metal types such as ferrous, non-ferrous, stainless steel, aluminum, copper and brass are reliably separated.

The electronic evaluation system uses this signal to generate a switching impulse for the solenoid which activates the double acting pneumatic cylinder of the reject system. The metallic contaminant is reliably rejected with very little loss of material due to the extremely fast and short deviation of the product stream. Reject time (dwell time of the reject gate) is adjustable. The dwell time is accumulatively increased in case of several rejects during the set dwell time. The reject gate returns automatically to its rest position. "The individual steps for the production of Pectin are simple, according to the Danish CP Kelco-Engineering Manager Joachim Schmidt, "the greatest know-how is in the production methods".

The QUICKTRONIC units with their low installation height and compact dimensions are easily integrated into our production, according to Joachim Schmidt.
