The perfect flour mill of Trinidad

The new flour mill operated by Nutrimix Feeds Ltd. on Trinidad is distinguished by its harmonious architecture, its cleanliness, and its state-of-the-art process technology.

With its crude oil and natural gas deposits, Trinidad has evolved into an industrial heavy weight in the Caribbean. One of the island's staple foods beside rice is wheat flour for preparing "rotis" - tortilla–like flat bread into which favorite foods are wrapped.

An own flour mill

The success story of Shaheed Mohammed, the owner of Nutrimix Feeds Ltd., started with the establishment of a completely vertically integrated poultry production operation. Beside chicken breeding, fattening, slaughtering, and portioning, it also includes the production of poultry feed and processing of the offals. This means Nutrimix produces exactly that food - poultry meat - that Trinidadians prefer most to wrap into their rotis.

Years ago, Shaheed Mohammed decided to have his own flour mill one day. This would enable him to sell not only his efficiently produced poultry meat, but also the flour for preparing rotis. He dismissed his original idea of buying a small second–hand mill. Instead, he started working systematically on his vision of constructing a state–of–the–art mill of his own. And that is ex-actly what he ultimately did.

Near the port

No wheat is grown on Trinidad. All of it is imported and has up to now been processed, packaged, and marketed by a state–owned flour mill. Now that the Nutrimix installation has been built, the state faces competition.

Shaheed Mohammed had his new grain mill constructed near the port of Point Lisas in the west of the island. He did not hesitate for very long before selecting this site. After all, Nutrimix Feeds Ltd. already operates warehousing facilities there for its own animal feed mill, which is enjoying steady growth.

The road was long up to the point where the supplier of the flour mill had been chosen. It was entirely clear to Shaheed Mohammed right from the outset that he wanted the best mill in the region and that it had to be equipped with cutting–edge process technology. In addition, he wanted it to be visually attractive and clean in order to impress his customers. A period of in–depth studies on various systems, suppliers, and building layouts followed before Buhler was finally awarded the contract for building the mill.

Generously designed and bright

The new Nutrimix mill went into service in 2004. Generous glass surfaces dominate the exterior of the building and reflect the owner's wish to construct a perfect mill. The first impression is confirmed also inside the building. The well–equipped laboratory and an experimental bakery assure a high product quality. They enable the miller to collaborate with customers in order to achieve the best results possible with the mill's various flour products. To ensure the high quality of Nutrimix flour, the cleaning system is equipped with the necessary machines for removing all the impurities from the different wheat varieties. This equipment includes a combi–cleaner, an array of indented cylinders, a scourer with an air–recycling aspirator, and the appropriate conditioning system with an automatic dampening feature.

Gentle and sanitary

If you did not notice it before, you will inevitably see it when you enter the spacious, spick and span roller mill floor: Here, everything has been designed with gentle grinding and future expansions in mind. The roll length demanded by the customer allows grinding with minimized heat development that is easy on the stock and the machinery. The four purifiers enable Nutrimix to produce top–grade flour from any variety of wheat, fully in line with the requirements of its small and large customers. Three ten–compartment plansifters guarantee the finest and whitest of flours throughout the region.

Impact machines are applied both ahead of conveying to the flour storage and handling system ( flour silo ) and ahead of bagging. This ensures optimal storability of the flour. All the bins and hoppers inside the building - from storage bin hoppers to bagging and loadout bins - are made of stainless steel. This, too, ensures top sanitation.

After all, Shaheed Mohammed`s vision was clear right from the start: He wanted a perfect mill.

Island of Trinity

In 1498, Christopher Columbus discovered a tropical island with three conspicuous peaks, which he baptized Trinity - or Trinidad in Spanish.

Only in 1592 did Spanish settlers start to populate the island, which is located to the northeast of Venezuela, where they grew cocoa and tobacco.

The name of the sister island - Tobago - is derived from the word "tobacco". In 1797, the British took control of Trinidad. During World War II, Trinidad was a military base of the Allies. At that time, the foundations for today`s infrastructure and industry were laid. The island state has been independent since 1962. Today, 1,088,644 inhabitants populate the island‚s total area of 5,128 square kilometers (status July 2005). The population is young, the average age being no more than 30. It is composed of Indian and African ethnic groups. The largest religious communities are Catholic and Hindu. Beside the petro-chemical industry, the island also has flourishing food processing and light manufacturing industries catering to local needs and for providing the neighboring islands with supplies. Banks, insurance companies, and wholesalers and

retailers dominate the services sector. Tobago profits from well-developed tourism activities. The Nobel laureate in literature in 2001, Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul, is a native of Trinidad. Many people know the typical steel bands who play music on drums made from empty oil barrels, calypso, and the colorful carnival.
