New return self-aligning return idlers

Posted in: , on 24. Dec. 2005 - 15:51

Dear Sirs,

We would like to receive your comments about the efficiency of the new self-aligning return rollers pivoting on an inclined swivel pin in order to balance eventual out-of-line running of the belt.

Please also inform us if you know any manufacturer of this product.

Thank you.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards.

Denis

Are you referring to the return roll frame on a pivot or the roll itself on an iternal pivot?

Can you give us more detail on this product. I have never seen a frame pivoting on an incline. What degree is the incline at?

Can you provice more details? Maybe a photo or a sketch.

Keep in mind that self aligning systems or trainers are only a means of correcting a problem with the system. They should only be used as a temporary installtion until the problem can be identified and corrected.

Hi Denis

You can try Austbelt in Queensland, Australia at

http://www.austbelt.com.au/abtracker.htm

They make a bullet proof return and carry side tracker as you described, on an inclined or angled swivel pin.

Although this is not a new design, they have been manufacturing for many years and have hundreds installed in many applications.

Email and contact details can be found on their site as above.

As Gary mentioned above, fixing the problem is the correct way to go.

I see these units as very cheap insurance compared to a damaged belt if things go wrong.

Dear Gary,

We are referring to the roll itself on an internal pivot.

Thanks

I guess U mean the TRUE TRACK return idler..

Pls refer attached web page

We have one on site - expensive, but they do work - as do some others types. I can not say if their life is better than others.

I beleive that these are also sold in RSA.

Cheers

Denis

Tru Trac is manufactured I believe in South Africa.

Their website is www.tru-trac.com but at time of writing they seem to be down.

You can see them at

http://www.engnetglobal.com/c/c.aspx/TRU002

for another reference.

I have used them here at our mine with much success. We have one 48" conveyor 2500 TPH that has approx 4000 feet of it hanging by chains from the roof of the mine. The nature of rock salt in a mine is that it is always moving and shifting the conveyor. We installed one about every 400 feet and it helped a great deal. Also as James says they are not cheap.

Martin Engineering makes a unique tracking device for the return side belt conveyors. It has a 3 to 1 motion ratio for close tracking tolerances. Information and where to purchase these can be found on our website:

www.martin-eng.com

Things to check for belt tracking problems:

1. Belt cupping

2. Belt camber

3. Crooked splices

4. Gravity takeup misalignment

5. Buildup on rolling components

6. Offcenter loading

7. Segregated loading

8. Surge loading

9. Rolling component alignment

10. Tied off tracking devices

11. Belt cleaner installation

12. Worn or missing rolls

13. Worn or missing lagging

14. Incorrect belt

15. Rubber skirtboard adjustment

All of the above are explained in detail in my book Foundations III

a copy can be obtained by also contacting our website. Good luck!

I have witnessed terrible tracking behavior using the idler roll center bearing pivot system. I would not recommend them. I wonder what the difference between installations where some claim their benefits?

Hi Larry

Well we only have one.

Fitted to 750mm belt - 200tph mixed products

Installed near bend/GTU unit.

As GTU unit is not built over square and getting wander due to COG shift and tilt of the GTU frame > belt mis tracking.

On small belts, the side clearance is not great before U hit steel work, so tracking of return belt is critical to prevent edge contact.

We have others on site - been thru a few sales rep talk and stuff etc...

As I said, the life of the unit has not been demonstrated as yet.

But, it does look promising cf other units that have been installed.

As I am an end user and not sales/supply, I would like U to comment on what U have found to work well for return belt training and what did not work for the TRU TRACK type..

Cheers

James
