Conveyor pulleysnub/drive

Hello my dear

We work at sarcheshme copper complex in Iran –a conveyor belt is used to transfer copper ore form the mine to concentration plant.

This belt is of 1500 meters length and 1600 mm wide with specification of ST3150 .

At present for the purpose of increasing the capacity of transferring material, we have added a drive at the location of pulley MKGG , which was used as snub pulley for the secondary drive (see the drawing)

Unfortunately, the gearbox of the added drive after a short period of time (about a month) broke, and after replacing that, it broke again

Now we have the following questions:

1.Technically, does it make sense to add this drive at this location?

2.Generally , what conditions a pulley drive should have?

3.What are the duties of a backstop in a drive system?

4.Can MKGG pulley (see DWG, attached file) be used as a drive pulley?

Please if possible, advise us

Without knowing all the details of your system like material, belt speed, dimensions not shown, etc, etc. and what you are increasing the capacity to and why. We cannot give you a definitive answer and can only generalize. Other questions come to mind. How are the drives controlled logically? Are they controlled by VFD's. They are all the same HP but are they truly matched, motor, reducer and pulley?

To attempt to answer your questions.

1.Technically, does it make sense to add this drive at this location? - It would make more sense to add a 4th 750 HP drive to MK-G but you could possibly use MK-GG if it is match exactly to the belt speed and logically controlled by a VFD. Without knowing the details outlined above we cannot be sure.

2.Generally , what conditions a pulley drive should have? - Not sure what you are asking here. The drive should be designed for the conditions required by it. The design should be by someone who is technically capable of sizing a drive system correctly.

3.What are the duties of a backstop in a drive system? - A backstop provides a function of preventing the belt from running backwards after a shutdown due to material load on an incline. If there is any incline in the system a backstop is typically required. The backstop must be sized to handle the load that will be applied and also capable of rotating at the speed of the reducer shaft it is installed on. In some cases an external backstop can be installed on a non drive pulley typically on a snub or bend near the head pulley.

4.Can MKGG pulley (see DWG, attached file) be used as a drive pulley? - Short answer is yes but without knowing all the details one cannot confirm for sure.

It is highly recommended that you seek a professional person competent in belt conveyor design before you attempt any further modifications. Reducer failures as quickly as you are describing tells me that whoever designed this does not have the necessary skills to make that determination.

Good luck with your system.
