Re: Basic Maintenance For Coveyor Belts

Buenos tardes Senior Christobol,

Daily maintenanace and inspection of conveyor belts is a neccesity. It is the only way you find bad splices, torn conveyor belt carcass, bad troughing and return idlers, failed transfer points due to plugging of chutes, and worn lagging on head pulleys.

Inspection of bearings and greasing drive units should be done once a week along with checking oil levels on gear boxes and hydraulic take up units, drive chain cases etc.

One of the big killers is plugged tail pulleys and plugged up drive units, where belt spillage and dust gets pulled under the drive unit and the tail pullies. These must be shoveled every day. If you convey a lot of dry material or wet material both items will cause operational problems with reduced torque and motor component failure eventually and it also causes excess wear and reduces overall efficiency on the drive componenents due to friction loss.

You have to remember that the drive unit will keep running until it is shut down or there is a electric motor or gear box failure-it does not know any better.

One of the big things that helps is the use of silicone caulk to seal mechanical splices and keep dust from falling on the lower return belt.

One of the biggest points I must stress to you is having a training troughing idler at every tenth troughing idler to eliminate a belt from destroying itself from being pulled from side to side in the event you have a splice failure or have to train a new belt section or add to an old one-it eliminates a lot of headaches.

Lastly, but just as important you must make sure the belt is level at the troughing and return idlers other wise it will not track properly, also grease the all troughing and return idlers at least once a year at a mininum.

I know all this because I lived it.

If you tell them this you have done all you can.

Esta es un muy grande problema para usted.

Via con Dios.
