Screen Plant for Small Sand/Gravel Operation?

I'm looking for expert advice on the best type and size of screener to buy.

I would like a small second-hand gas or diesel screen plant to screen about 10,000 to 20,000 yards of gravel per year. A unit that can handle from 500 to 1,000 yards per day would be fine.

This gravel is in an old glacial deposit in western Canada. About 75% of the material in the pit is clean sand, nice enough to use for beach sand or other uses. The other 25% is rock, from pea size up to 10 or 12 inches. Most of the rock is under three inches.

I would like to screen the material into about four sizes: sand, rock sized from 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch, rock sized from one inch to three inches, and then the larger rock.

My loader has a four yard bucket, so the grizzly/hopper needs to be at least ten feet wide.

The most common type of small screen plant used around here is the type with a hopper at one end with a conveyor belt running underneath. The belt elevates the gravel to a height of about twelve feet and then dumps it onto a vibrating screen. A three or four cylinder engine runs the machine. (I used to have one of this type. It was old and required constant adjusting and repair.)

A more sophisticated version of the above system is something like the CEC or Roadrunner units with two side conveyors coming off at right angles. I haven't seen one work, but that looks like it could build four stock piles in one operation.

I've also seen units for sale like the Read RB150 or RB90 screeners that use no conveyor belts. They also use a stationary gas or diesel engine and will handle a 4 yard loader. I did come across smaller units like this that do have more decks and side conveyors to separate out more sizes of aggregate. But the ones that I found are only for smaller loaders.

Then there are the rotating Trommel screens. I know little about these. Are these at all suitable for my needs?

Since this won't see a lot of use, the available budget is not large. Does anyone have suggestions about the best type of unit to buy to end up with a variety of sizes of aggregate? Efficiency and cost of operation are important considerations here.

Small Screener

Well, you basically already have the answer in hand from your post

Looking at your precise sizes needed:

- I am a CEC distributor, just FYI....it will certainly do the TPH, SIZES and stacking needs required. Small diesel drive.

- A good ole POWERSCREEN will do the trick no problem......4x8 double deck, which will give you 3 products, and do these sizes piece of cake...lots of them around also, used, very cheap and parts are readily available. A good piece of aggregate equipment, would serve this purpose well. Small diesel drive.

- You do not need much bigger than a 4x8 2 deck, but if the price is right a 5x12 2 dk would do nicely. But, your needs will be easily met by this size and good for your loader size range also.

Merry Christmas..........good luck. George

George, thanks for your reply. You say these things are cheap. I guess "cheap" is a relative term. What do you think I need to spend for a two or three deck screener in decent condition?

I haven't had any luck finding a decent used screener in my price range in this part of the country (Saskatchewan). Hauling something to the prairies from eastern Canada or the US would add a lot to the cost unless a person can get a good backhaul rate.

I can get you a inexpensive unit from round here........ONTARI0....

around 25k range.

Can also find a cheap backhaul rate to boot.

George,

Can you provide details by email about what you have available? Pictures would be nice if possible. If the picture image sizes aren't too big, you could send them to wheels02ca@yahoo.ca

Thanks.
