System for free flowing carbon black powder

Posted in: , on 4. Apr. 2016 - 12:53

Dear Sir,

I require calculations for conveying as follows:

Material: Carbon Black Powder

BD : 0.5 T/CuM

Sieve analysis : 100 % <200 Microns

Capacity : 10 TPH

Vertical distance : 24 meters

Horizontal : 76 meters

No. of bends : 8

Please help with sizes of pipe, bend radius, air requirements and mode of conveying ( lean, dense phase etc. )

Best Regards

Nathan

Dear Nathan,

Particle size of <200 microns shows that your carbon black is in pellet form. Pelleted carbon black will break up into "fluff" if dilute phase conveying is used. To prevent this breakup, I will use dense phase conveying with line injectors for pelleted carbon black.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Dear Sir,

I consider less than 200 microns to fall under the category of fines. I would like you to elaborate as to why you are considering this as pellets.

Yes we envisage dense phase conveying for the application

Dear NATHAN,

Carbon black particles are commonly called either "fluff" or pellets. Fluff is the material that is produced in the furnaces. It is in the sub-micron range. But pellets are made by using mixing a binding agent with the fluff. You can call pellets "fines" if you like but the term fines is commonly used for very fine materials, in the range of a few microns.

Dear Sir,

As this is a byproduct from tyre and other rubber industries iam sure it will be in pellet form.

Could you specify in detail the dense phase conveying system that would be suitable.

Dear Nathan,

We should select a dense phase system in which the conveying velocity stays below 10 ft/sec even at the end of the conveying line. For this velocity requirement, the pick up velocity should only be a few ft/sec. Such a low velocity will result in formation of plugs in the conveying line. The length of the plugs that will form is minimized by injecting a controlled volume of secondary conveying air into the conveying line via specially designed line injectors. The spacing of these injectors is generally about 5 ft apart depending upon line diameter and line layout.

This low velocity will minimize attrition (breakup) of pelleted (beaded) carbon black particles. This attrition should be limited to about 5% to prevent generation of fines because excessive fines will cause flow and other problems.

The above conveying systems are supplied by a number of Conveying System Vendors in the USA.

Let me know if you need any more information.

Good luck.

Many thanks for your guidelines. We are looking for a good technical collaboration with a reknowned company in this field. Could you suggest some?

===========================================================

Dear Nathan,

To answer your question please clarify the purpose of your technical collaboration because it can be with carbon black manufacturers,or with manufacturers of pneumatic conveying systems with expertise in conveying carbon black, or with engineering companies with expertise in pneumatic conveying of carbon black.

So, the answer to your question depends upon what you are looking for.
