Dear Sir,

according to your data a Pipe Conveyor with a diameter between 400 mm and 500 mm can be used. The belt should have a Steelcord or Aramid reinforcement.

For more detailed information the track of the installation with the horizontal and vertikal curves and the heights have to be known.

KOCH Transporttechnik is world market leader in Pipe Conveyor technology. We are just building a Pipe Conveyor with an axe distance of more than 8 km. Other offers of similar installations concerning the massflow of 3500 t/h and the axe distance are close to contract.

If you want more detailed information, please contact me directly.

Dear Mr. Lal Dora,

We would use a 400mm Pipe diameter and a 1500mm wide belt. The belt speed would be over 4m/s. The belt would be of steelcord design, and further belt specifications will depend on the drive technology.

We are currently installing a 19km long conveyor with 5 horizontal curves and have optimised the belt specification based on state of the art drive technology. Please send us further details such as lift and conveyor routing to perform a calculation which we are able to share with you.

With the longest pipe conveyors and most superior designs, ThyssenKrupp Robins is the world leader in pipe conveyor technology.

Up to 65 vertical and horizontal curves in one conveyor, we are employing curve designs with optimized radii based on belt tensions, belt modulus and buckling criteria and more. Our designs incorporate automatic speed controls during operation, multiple drive load sharing and torque controls and cross-sectional fill controls and many other features.

The ThyssenKrupp Robins Pipe Conveyor - The Most Superior Pipe Conveyor in the World.

Mr. Lal Dora, we are looking forward to do a calculation for you.

Dear Mr. Lal Dora,

we have made the best experiences with conveyor belts of the German manufacturer Contitech in the installations we supplied. It is important that the belts are designed appropriately to form a nice round tube and not to turn over the distance.

The wear resistance of the top cover in particular in ore applictions is excellent as well despite this may be not the no. 1 priority in a long distance application like yours.

If you should need more information just call our MD, Mr. Naresh Hingorani, in Mumbai (ph. +91 22 25772874)

Gents

There seems to be a lot of posts on pipe conveyors and this post is asking for the belt specifications.

This has led me to wonder, with all the experts around, what are the generic design specifications/criteria for pipe conveyors??

eg

Overall design - belt sag, fill capacity, curves and combinations etc

Belt specifications - it seems that cover wear on the lips is an issue - hence, there must be key specifications or requirements for belts to be used in pipe conveyors.

I do not have a need for a pipe conveyor, but I am interested to learn from the experts and leaders in this game what are the key salient points for high performance pipe conveyors as it seems to be hot/high topic item in recent times

Cheers

Belt Spec.

Posted on 11. Feb. 2005 - 07:15

Dear Mr. Lal Dora,

In my openion it would better to keep speed of belt as 3m/sec.The dia. of pipe is comming out as 500mm.The sectional area would be 0.155 Sq. m with 75% filling factor. For furnishing belt specification, I need profile of conveyor.Belt width will be 3.14X.5 +.25=1.82 say 1800mm.

Re: Pipe Conveyor

Dear Mr Lal Dora,

As the pipe diameter increases the system costs escalate non-linearly. Have you considered the option of TWO pipe conveyors sharing the load ? These two conveyors could be vertically parallel thereby optimising the structural and civil costs to a significant extent.

Such a system would not only reduce the belt width and rating - and hence the cost PER CONVEYOR (although there would be two conveyors here) it would give you the added comfort of having a standby system in case one of the conveyors develop some problem / breakdown.

Perhaps you could consider this option.

Kayem

Dear Kayem,

Your suggestion of two pipe conveyors may have merit with the redundancy. However, it will require over 50% more belt and idler length. Recall the pipe capacity goes up by the square of the diameter while its width is proportional.

Be careful with some offerings of wisdom. There are pitfalls with their selections.l

Also note, you should consider some allowance for variablility in the bulk density. I would suggest you allow for added speed to correct for a number of factors when put into operation.

Below I posted a BELTSTAT crossection of a 1400mm wide by 390mm dia, running at 4.5 m/s yielding 72% loading; a 175mm overlap to show a possible selection

DEAR Mr DORA

WHY YOU WANT TO PROVIDE PIPE CONVEYOR FOR THIS APPLICATION . BELT CONVEYOR WILL BE CHEAPER OPTION

IF YOU WANT TO PROVIDE PIPE CONVEYOR

FOR THIS APPLICATION YOU HAVE NOT INDICATED NO OF CURVES AND LIFT INVOLVED IN THE SYSTEM . HOWEVER CONSIDERING 2/3 HORRIZONTAL CURVES AND +20-25 M LIFT VERY ROUGH IDEA OF TECHNICAL PARTICULARS OF CONVEYOR SHALL BE AS FOLLOWS

PIPE DIA-450 mm

SPEED- 4.0 m/SEC

BELT RATING--ST 2000 6/4 CONVERTHICKNESS GRADE M

DRIVE -2X1000 KW AT HEAD END

1X1000 KW AT TAIL END

IDLER SPACING-- 1.8 M

ROLL DIA-----------152 mm OR HIGHER

LOOP TAKEUP WITH TAKEUP TOWER AND WINCH NEAR DRIVE END

FOR SOFT STARTING YOU MAY NEED SCOOP TYPE / DELAY CHAMBER TYPE WITH EXTERNAL PUMP FLUID COUPLING OR SOFT STARTER

SPEED AT DRIVE AND TAIL END TO BE SECRONISED

THIS CONVEYOR WILL REQUIRE DYNAMIC ANALYSES AND WILL BE DONE BY SPECILIST IN FIELD LIKE CONVEYOR DYNAMICS USA

Dear Shri Lal Dora,

As you intend to install a pipe conveyor, the best approach would be to refer to the manufacturers of pipe conveyors for their quotation, which would indicate the necessary specifications and other data.

The belt specification depends upon pipe conveyor profile, drive arrangement being used, drive specifications, starting factor, belt make & construction, and so on. This amounts to fairly good design work of the pipe conveyor. So, possibly, you may not get your expected information in this forum beyond the pipe diameter speed etc, because the belt specification is the culmination of all these vital parameters / factors / and technical know-how.

Dear sir

I feel Mr Mulani is correct for this conveyor nobody will provide you complete information. The reasons of not providing informations are following

1.0 For exect calculations layout of conveyor and operting conditions are required same are not made available by thread starter

2.0 Even after receiving information It is a long procedure to decide drive ratings and numbers

3.0 These calculations and designing methods are propriotoy for pipe conveyor manufacturers and they may not like to disclose in forum

4.0 Forum members may not be sure about existance of such enquary when thread starter is sielent after giving the requirement, it may be for his acadamic interest

Aramid Belts

Posted on 25. Dec. 2007 - 03:45

Dear Sir,

Many of the posts, Aramid reinforced belts are referred together with Steel cord belts.

May I get the information, who are the manufacturer of Aramid belts?

Can we replce Steel cord belts with Aramid belts? How cost effective that will be?

Re: Pipe Conveyor

Posted on 25. Dec. 2007 - 04:16

I thought aramid fiber belts have gone defunct. Many problems developed with them over time. Most have been replaced by steel cord belt construction.

Aramid has an Achilles heal. The fiber cannot go into compression without self-destruction. It cannot take the stress at the denier level. Thus, vertical and horizontal curves, and wing to center roll junction stresses need a more in-depth treatment than can be found in conveyor design texts. There may be new coating methods that overcome this today, but, I am not aware of them.

I consulted to DuPont, the inventers of Aramid fibers. They built a multi-billion dollar factory for Kevlar based construction. I aided in working with Trelleborg and DuPont using fabric and aramid cords. The project was abandon in the late 1980’s or early 1990’s. I talked to Goodyear, a month past, about the work with Kevlar. They also abandoned the program.

Dear Mor. Nordell,

Thanks for the detailed reply.

M/s Metso Minerals still has a detailed catalogue for Aramid belts in their website. I could not get any response from them.

Do they still manufacture the aramid belts?

If so, it must come from their Trelleborg facility. I will try to find out.

Why do you want it? You must be very careful in its application, if you want long life, as I noted some of the pitfalls.

≫17 Km Pipe & Conventional Conveyor Flights

Posted on 28. Jun. 2010 - 07:50

Many >17 km overland trough conveyors are in operation with client acceptance/satisfaction transporting coal.

There are at least two pipe conveyors at around 8 km and one just awarded at 7 km. There are pipe conveyors about to be bid with >10 km range.

The specifications of 17 km transporting 2000 t/h is not unreasonable. Are you trying to bid this or design this yourself? Are you seeking expert support?

There are significant differences in how various designers may promote/define the specifications. There are key factors that you will need to know to differentiate proper/prudent engineering from past norms.

We can offer prudent engineering based on recent performance that demonstrates old methods from moderate techniques. The modern techniques show great advances against past/old methods. You can witness old and new running side-by-side.

Let us show you what the new tools can do, if you seek technical support.

18 Km Pipe Conveyor

Posted on 28. Jun. 2010 - 08:13

I suggest you contact me by my email below for further direct discussion regarding 18 km pipe and/or conventional trough conveyors.

You may note we have published much on 16-20 km overland systems and their upgrades.

We have not published much on the next generation pipe conveyors that are operating today. When we publish, we no longer own the technology. Others take claim regardless of their knowledge. This is life and technical excellence.

There must be a good reason to apply the pipe conveyor. Could you share with the forum why a pipe?
