At this moment there are 30 minor ports in India which includes ports under ministry of shipping and under private players.To commissioned a major port it takes min-36-40 months and the cost is very high.To get a port viable it should handle min. 50-60000 tonnes of material per day.Major ports in India charging betwee 7-8 us$ per tonne (only handling ) from the clients.If that client has a transshiper which has 60,000 t storage capapcity and-50000 t per day discharge capacity then this is going to be a prifitable business for him.A used ship(transshipper) cost around between 40 -50 million US $. The saving for the clients per year if he handles 12 mtpa is around 8 million US $,so he can very well own the transshipper after 7-8 months.
