I'm looking for your thoughts on the relative merits of replacing an existing vacuum/pressure system in kind or with a new mechanical system. The current system conveys quicklime from storage silos 350 ft via vacuum and then an additional 150 ft via pressure. The system is old and needs replacement. I'm considering simple replacement of the existing components with new equipment and/or installation of a new silo closer to the point of use with a tubular chain drag conveyor to move the lime the 150 ft to the hoppers. Any ideas?

Pneumatic/Mechanical Conveying

You may want to consider using a fold-over type belt conveyor. Imperial Technologies has a fold-over style belt that worked quite well on a fertilizer application we worked on. They have a web site.

Good luck.

If you had good experience with your pneumatic system, a simple replacement of components is in order. However, if your maintenance and operating costs were high, you should consider either an enclosed drag type conveyor, as you described, or an enclosed belt system such as a pipe belt, the Enerka belt system, or Imperial's Multi-Fold belt system (described by the previous poster).

Imperial can be reached at (330) 305-2100 or via e-mail at info@imperial-technologies.com

The Enerka system is being marketed in the US by Fairfield Engineering (visit their web site).

My apologies! I incorrectly identified Fairfield Engineering as a source for the Enerka-Becker system.

Fairfield markets the Sicon-Roulands enclosed belt system.

Fairfield may be reached through their website at www.fairfieldengineering.com

The Enerka-Becker enclosed belt system is available through Spaans Bulk Handling Systems. Their website is www.spaans-bhs.nl
