That may be right is some cases. Any size of conveyor can be calculated if you have the right data and studied how to use the software by reading the help files.

We use this software as a marketing instrument. But asking money for similar software is done by a lot of companies, while they are using, like we did, calculation methods from ISO and DIN standards.

The software can not be all that bad. Over 250 people world wide are using it.

We renew the software if there is a serious complain and proposal for improvement and let all users know about the new releases.

We were looking at a 1.5 km troughed belt conveyor in a 17 deg decline shaft hauling 600 tph ROM ore from lower ore stopes to the surface. We didn't have to do serious calculation, because Cable Belt and the Steel Core Belt Vendors would do that for us in great detail. All we were looking at was a rough check. Cable Belt said they could it for us at 4 m/s on a 600 mm belt. The Steel Core guys were worried that with ore coming out of a dewatered stope the whole lot might end up in a mudslide with nothing coming out the other end. So they were looking at a 1200 mm belt at say 1.4 m/s. Our question was simple - who's pulling who's leg.

We could have done in with pencil and pocket calculator using the CEMA Handbook and the back of an old envelope. But we thought that was a little "kitch...", so we looked around for a simple conveyor calculation program. All we needed was power calculation and belt tension. Power was about 800 kw (which could be supplied through dual synchronous drives). The pulley specs were tied to the belt stock catalogue, so the suggestions were way into the red.

We toyed with the idea of vertical curves. Once out of the decline tunnel we had a horizontal run of about 150 m (to keep steelwork costs down), and then a rise of 30 m to the top of the stockpile. What sort of radius would we need for the convex and concave portions of the layout? Vendor feedback took weeks from West Australia to South Africa, for an installation in the Congo. And then our advisers wanted cash upfront before they would give us any more detailed layout information. All we needed was some approximate rule-of-thumb guidelines so we could sketch in a reasonable conveyor profile as a brief for the Vendor calculations. And we didn't want to look like amateurs who didn't have a clue about conveyors.

That sort of stuff is way outside normal industrial applications, but shows the sort of quick answer stuff that is useful to have at times.

This exercise is given as courtesy and illustrating a bad guess. You spend more time trying to get something for nothing and end up with garbage for nothing. I challenge you to find a code or calculator that would get you close, on the following points, ignoring the moisture issue.

It took me 22 minutes and 30 seconds, using BELTSTAT to find:

1. Your 800 kW is too low.

2. Head end geometry is an exercise in false economy with 150 flat and then 30 m rise to discharge the product, after 17 deg. slope (1250m length; 382.2 m rise)

3. You cannot fit the necessary curves into this geometry without great expense

4. Concave curve radius would have to exceed 1700m radius, at the discharge pulley, before special allowances. Notes: a) belt center tension cause belt safety factor to be exceeded, depending on design criteria; b) causes head end geometry to be significantly increased.

5. Convex radius would have to exceed 500 m, with double the idlers in the curve. Notes: a) belt edge tensions will exceed normal belt safety factor, b) must set criteria to either up belt strength or increase radius and head station geometry

6. Above points also show the need for the a lot of extra elevated and ground based steel and idlers

7. Bad geometry design, given that the flat section should be at the bottom not the top for a multitude of reasons.

8. Where does the take-up go? Big cost impact and dynamic shock wave impact with +10x times difference in take-up mass, big flywheels, et al.

I see now I have spent 52 minutes (30 minutes to communicate) to do calculations and respond to your approach with the notion that cheap or free is a good deal. The old Arab proverb: When you don’t know, and don’t know you don’t know “--- “ is applicable. Viva la BELTSTAT. ■

I sometimes worry when I appear to see those who would have a program into which all they have to do is type numbers and out pops the design solution.

Many years ago (before the PC appeared) I had "discussions" with managers regarding software to do run on a mainframe for machine design. As far as I was concerned I was only interested in producing an "engineers tool" that would remove drudgery, NOT something that any clerk could be expected to produce a design from with a total lack of understanding of what he/she was doing! My comments were not appreciated. ■

Our software is not made for steelcord belts, but only for normal rubber and PVC belts, based on DIN and ISO standards, which are freely available for everybody. All we did is put this calculation methods in an easy to use software tool.

Extreme configurations might not give the right results.

For the 1500 metres and 17 degrees inclination we come to a minimum of about 1.200 kWs (depending on some parameters like dirt and corrosion). Nothing and nobody is perfect and that also goes for this program. It is meant to give a rough impression. For straight forward installations (which are 99% of the number of belt conveyors) it has proven to be a handy tool.

For small and short conveyors where gravity dominates, compared to length effects, you will get ball-park power and tension.

Design of long more complex conveyors is keeping scientists and researchers busy worldwide working on the rolling force calculation methods, continually. A a rich person once said, you might get what you pay for, or conversely you will probably pay a lot more for a long conveyor if its design is free. GL ■
