Bamburi cement Ltd. a company owned by Lafarge group is one of the leading cement manafacturing companies in Africa. We installed a modern clinker truck loading plant. The system consists of a belt conveyor system feeding an elevator which feeds into a silo with a telescopic chute loading onto the clinker trucks. The whole system is de-dusted with a dust filter.

Recently, the de-dusting system has been experiencing a recurring problem of i) inefficient de-dusting at the chute, and ii) on operation, clinker dust is clinging and choking the filter bags and the dust collection chamber is empty, however when the filter fan is stopped with the filter purging system on, heavy dust falls into the filter hopper, tripping the star feeder.

I am requesting for advise on the possible source of problem and remedial action(s).

Dear WAFUA,

It sounds as if you are experiencing a negative airflow problem. I would recommend that you contact a company such as Martin Engineering, or the manufacturer of your dedusting equipment, for possible solutions.

You can find Martin Engineerings' contact information in the directory of this website.

If you have problems doing so, feel free to contact me by E-mail and I'll get it for you.

The best people to give you a solution will be your supplier of the loading system.

Most of the recent telescopic chutes comes with a built in dust control system. One Such supplier is Michigan based Dust Control & Loading Inc ( DCL Inc). Their web site address is http://www.dclinc.com You may find more details from their web iste

Double Tipping Valve

Posted on 5. Apr. 2004 - 08:19

It sounds like you are loading the bags and while the fan is on you are also drawing product through the discharge of the collector. A double tipping valve or a rotary feeder on the discharge would help. Is this a jet pulse system? You may a problem with a diaphram being stuck open and holding no air pressure. Also if you have done like many do you may have gone to a bigger sheave on the motor or a smaller one on the fan. To much draw is more of a problem than a help. You want to control the dust not take it away. If this is any help let me know and I'll try to help more. If you already have tipping valves or a rotary feeder you may want to check and make sure they stil have a good seal.

Clinker Loading De-Dusting

It sounds as though the dust collector's cleaning system is not working but there may be many reasons why for the trouble you describe.

Is the compressed air at recommended pressure? Is it clean and dry? Are all the pulse valves working? Is the pulse controller set up correctly?

You really need to get a knowledgable person to survey the plant.

Clinker Loading

Posted on 6. Apr. 2004 - 12:18

This sounds like a cleaning system failure.

The dust is being collected to a point where the differential P across the bags is very high and the fan can not maintain the gas flow. So, the gas flow is less and the de-dusting effect at the loading point is lower.

Pls check

The bag differnetial pressure to confirm this - over 1.5kPA is too high.

Check the pulsing system - valve firing and air pressure.

If this is not the issue, then the bags could be effected - blinded by moisture and clinker dust. Then U need to replace the bags.

Thanks

James

Dear WAFUA,

It is difficult to visualize your system in totality. However, from the description given by you, your problem can be possibly summarized in following one point.

- Filter bags getting clogged and dust control becomes gradually in-effective

The above situation could arise due to following reasons :

- Bag automatic cleaning frequency is longer.

- Bag cleaning intensity is not sufficient.

- Bag cleaning system functions properly but your system is sucking excessive dust, making it ineffective. This could be due to (a) More dust in material (b) More turbulence in flow (c) Excessive velocity of air flow at sucking points (d) Air sucking from wrong locations (e) Filter bags filtering characteristics are mismatch to system design (f) Sucking should mainly suck air and should not suck / carry away the dust forcefully from flow.

The above are basic points, which can be kept in considerations while examining the various items. The specific solution can come from experts / manufacturers of system, who will have resources to see, examine, test the system, its various items, their design features etc. to find the various reason/s for troublesome behaviour of your system, and thereby the consequent remedies.
