A new problem encountered with scale in piping.

Posted in: , on 29. Apr. 2005 - 08:16

Greetings form Australia.

I have been presented a problem to attack and frankly I have not tread in this area bfore. The problem is. I have a 900NB pipe (cooling water) that is heavily scaled with a dense hard (concrete equivalent) scale that I am required to remove. The line in question is unable to be isolated as it is a lifeline. I am chasing experience in this or knowledge on ways to tackle this tricky problem.

Information:

pipe length: 1.2 Klms

Design: it is located in pipe racks within a refinery with limited access.

Unable to get isolation. the 900NB clean state is down to approx 400NB in parts due to scale builup.

Water PH is slightly alkaline to to nature of the process.

pinpointing blockage points is also difficult. suggestions here are appreciated.

Thanking you

Pipe Scale Problem

Greetings from the "frozen Eastern Wilderness" 1140 feet above mean sea level,

I have an easy solution for you< I think :^).

Your needs will best be suited by a pipeline pig-that can scour the inner bore of the line

unattended and it wil also inspect the line as well- If you google (pipeline and gas journal) or (pipeline pigs) you will have lots of contacts and information-also a list of available contractors in your continental area.

The big thing is the need having room for a pig launching and retrieving portions in the pipe area-initial entry point and end point. I promised my self no pig jokes but I could not resist- those little squealers really holler when they get blown out of a tube- sorry about that-But in all seriousness if you can find a local pipeline contractor they should be able to help you clean your plumbing with little trouble-like I said you will need a pig launching section and a retrieving section installed in your piping-the pipe line pigs are flexible enough to take serios bends these days. They will help you very quickly with out the need to remove and reinstall new piping.

Gibbsy what is it you produce? soda ash perhaps?

Herein are few sites for you:

Girard industries has the poly pig it is or was the first in the pipeline pig cleaners and it is

very easy to use. They also have a great web site as well.

I hope I have been of some help.

Pipe Cleaning Problem

Dear Gibbsy,

If you can take this line down from the pipe rack to the ground level in about 20 ft long pieces, a solution that will definitely work is "shot blasting". In this method small size shots of carbon steel or stainless steel are injected into the pipe at a high velocity. These shots will remove the deposits and leave the pipe interior perfectly clean.

I can send you the "shot blasting" specifications if you want to pursue this method.
