Nine hundred thousandth engine of the 1011/2011 series

The success story of an industrial engine

In December 2005, the 900,000th engine of the 1011/2011 series left the assembly line in Cologne-Porz. This fact is backed up the success story of an industrial engine from DEUTZ AG spanning seventeen years already. The development concept for the 1011/2011 series was in 1983 unconventional but convincing. The innovative features referred to the engine oil used as cooling medium and the use of a toothed belt drive. The engine oil does not only provide for correct lubrication, but above all keeps the operating temperature low. Dipl.-Ing. Werner Lemme from DEUTZ AG was involved in the development activities of this series with record-breaking tendency: “The fact that in the case of the 1011 DEUTZ favoured for the first time a toothed belt drive for an industrial engine was watched by many experts with great scepticism. But the success of the masterpiece of German engineering art evidences that we are right.“

Since the start of regular production of the oil/air-cooled engine in 1988 the unit has been installed in more than 200 different types of equipment. In its power class the industrial engine is the unrivalled No. 1 and is a best seller in the USA as well. As early as in 2000, DEUTZ could celebrate the 500,000th unit. Werner Lemme: “Already today all of us are looking forward to the one million“.

The “Ten Eleven“, as the unit was called at the time of its market launch, can be supplied with two, three and four cylinders (bore/stroke 91/105mm and 91/112mm) with integrated or conventional cooling system. The power range from 22 to 61 kW is covered by rated speeds between 1500 and 3000 min-1. The two and three-cylinder units are supplied only as naturally aspirated versions, the four-cylinder model is also available with exhaust turbocharging. The crankcase is acoustically optimized.

The engines of the 2011 series are available in two versions. When an OEM opts for the integrated cooling system, DEUTZ supplies a ready-to-install drive unit. In the case of conventional cooling, the oil is cooled down via a separate oil-to-air heat exchanger. Available are two, three and four-cylinder engines (bore/stroke 94/112mm) with a power range from 23 to 74.9 kW at rated speeds between 1500 and 2800 min-1. The two-cylinder unit is only supplied as naturally aspirated version, the three and four-cylinder units are also available with exhaust turbocharging. All service points are arranged on the same side of the engine.

The success story will be carried on in the forthcoming years, when the 2011 series will as from 2008 meet the exhaust emission regulations as per TIER 3. Development activities with the focus on an engine periphery without any oil lines have been initiated already.
