Ajax Equipment key contributor to UK manufacturing initiative

Powder handling specialist, Ajax Equipment, is to play a key role in a Government sponsored, advanced manufacturing initiative named Project Chariot. The £18m project, led by Procter & Gamble’s Newcastle Innovation Centre, will develop innovative processes for the production of super fine powders for the global supply chain.

Ajax is collaborating with the Centre for Process Innovation and the universities of Birmingham, Durham, Leeds and Cranfield to develop a multi-coating system for fine particles based on the company’s continuous screw mixing technology. Ajax is providing a range of processing and feeding equipment for the project.

Ajax Equipment Ltd is a specialist manufacturer of solids handling and processing equipment, incorporating Lynflow technology. It has over 40 years experience in the design and manufacture of equipment for a wide range of organisations involved in food and confectionery processing, pharmaceutical, fine chemicals and all industries using bulk solids.

The Bolton based company has a team of qualified technical engineers and skilled craftsmen who manufacture in-house the wide range of bespoke solids handling equipment that we supply to our UK and international customers.

The three year project is partly funded by the government’s Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative, which was launched by Vince Cable in 2011 and aims to help existing UK supply chains grow and achieve World Class standards, while encouraging and retaining quality manufacturing in the UK.

Ajax Equipment director, Mark Waters, said “Chariot will enable Ajax to form long-term partnerships with leading academic organisations and industrial partners, and assist in the future creation of high skilled engineering posts here at Ajax, as well as providing many opportunities for future sales.”

About the Project Chariot

Procter & Gamble Technical Centres, based in Newcastle, has been awarded £8.85 million for project ‘Chariot’, as part of the Government’s Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI). The eight-strong consortium has also invested £9.04 million of their own money, bringing the total investment to £17.89 million.

Chariot aims to manufacture products that open up new markets for products made in existing UK companies. The project partners will develop new and innovate equipment and processes that mean UK facilities will save money but increase their capability to produce quality consumer products.

Procter & Gamble Technical Centres Ltd conducts research and development for new consumer products. The project Chariot involves Universities in Leeds, Birmingham, Durham and Cranfield to further research and development in the UK

Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI)

Business Secretary Vince Cable announced the creation of the Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI) on 6 December 2011.

Up to £245 million has been made available through the initiative to improve the global competitiveness of UK advanced manufacturing supply chains.

Suppliers, including small and medium sized enterprises, were encouraged to submit joint proposals with a sectoral level impact to create world-class excellence in supply chains. The funding is to support research and development, skills training, and capital investment to help UK supply chains achieve world-class standards and encourage major new suppliers to locate in the UK.
