Repeat order for Trellex Wear Protection with new rigids

Leading Belgian quarry operator, Gralex, has lined the dump bodies of five new purpose-ordered Komatsu HD605 rigid dump trucks with Trellex wear rubber lining plates from Metso Minerals.

The new trucks replace four of six O & K K100 rigid dump trucks delivered 17 years ago and which had hauled more than 35 million tonnes of porphyry, considered to be one of Europe’s toughest and most abrasive minerals with a compressive strength of 40,000 psi (2800 kg/cm2).

The six O & K 80 t haulers had also been fitted with Trellex wear rubber lining plate in the dump bodies to provide high wear resistance and guarantee the long service life achieved.

Operating out of the Porfibel quarry in Quenast, west of Brussels in the Province of Brabant Wallon, the trucks belong to the Gralex Group which also operates 16 other quarries throughout Belgium.

The company has been relying on Trellex wear plates for more than 17 years with many of its fleet of O & K and Faun rigid haulers protected with rubber lined dump bodies.

At Porfibel, the dump bodies are regularly checked for ‘wear and tear’ with the quarry workshop replacing on average three individual plates as required each year.

According to Plant Workshop Manager, M. Galio Laureiro, the life span of the plates is dependant on many factors including the shape of the rock and place of impact. “Even the skill of the loader operators is a factor,” he added.

He confirmed however that a minimum of two years is expected in the main impact area of the dump body, whilst plates on the sidewalls will each last between 5-6 years.

The benefits of the Trellex wear plates are principally to prevent wear to the dumpers steel body. “It’s cheaper to replace a plate than a new dump body,” said Galio Laureiro.

The rubber pads deaden the noise for the operator and nearby workers and in the case of Porfibel, neighbouring residences, meeting environmental legislation. “It also provides more comfort for the operator and offers significant savings for the hydraulics system with reduced impact,” said Galio Laureiro.

New Komatsu fleet

“With this experience we had no hesitation in specifying the five new Komatsu 60 t dump trucks to be fitted with Trellex wear plates,” confirms Galio Laureiro.

A team of three Metso Minerals fitters have been responsible for installing the wear plates on-site, in Gralex’s Porfibel workshop.

Featuring approximately 70 plates, it took the team just 32 hours to stud weld and fit the plates to each dump body.

The plates, measuring up to 1500 x 750 mm, feature a variety of rubber pad thicknesses vulcanised to a 5 mm thick metal plate bolted to the dump body.

Three different types of Trellex plates, PP50, PP75 and PP100, provide plate thicknesses of 50 mm, 75 mm and 100 mm respectively; with the PP100 being fitted to the bottom, PP75 on the sides and front, PP50 to the cap.

Porfibel operation

Covering an area of 1000m long x 900m wide, Quenast quarry is considered to be the one of largest in Belgium with a total height of 150m. With six working benches, the quarry floor is 75m below sea level.

The quarry produces more than 2 million t a year for use as railway ballast and highway construction.

A 1300t/hr ‘dragon’ primary crusher installed more than 20 years ago, and considered to be the biggest of its type at the time, still plays a key role in operations.

Material dumped by the haulers into a tremie and scalper, feeds the ‘dragon’ in the primary stage of crushing. Once again Trellex wear plates protect the crushers steel linings to ensure continued operation.

New Trellex conveyors

Gralex has also recently completed the installation of two new belt conveyors to improve rock flow to the crushing and screening plant, maintaining a completely 100% Trellex installation.

The two new belts feature 360 m and 850 m lengths with a width of 140 cm and a thickness of 20 mm.

Both belts with an inclination of 6° and 20° pass rock from the quarry into the production area. In addition to the new belts, the quarry features more than 3 km of Trellex cable belts from Metso Minerals Wear Protection and Conveyors.
