How to Cross a 500 m River?

Posted in: , on 22. Dec. 2010 - 02:33

We are currently putting a project together where we will be taking Frac Sand across a river that is aprox 1,500 feet wide. The sand is 40/70 and 70/140 mesh, total tonnage per year will be 400,000 tons. Also the river is frozen 3 months a year that was the reason for the span the ice in the spring will cause havoc to pilings in the river if the setup was a non clear span.

Our first option was building a suspension bridge, the span would be bolted together in 40 foot pieces. This would include a standard enclosed belt conveyor but the weight and costs of this option is too high.

Just wondering if there was some type of pipe or capsule conveyor that we could just trench and lay under water. Or some type of flexible cable conveyor we might be able to use. Any other proven technologies that are economical would be helpful.

Any tips or contacts would be valuable.

Cheers,

Scott

Suspension Bridge To Span 1500 Ft.

Maybe you need another bridge engineer. 500 m span is not difficult. What is difficult is the light 400,000 yearly tonnage, that is hard to compete with trucks unless you have a complex and long route. For less than 3 km and you light capacity, I think a belt conveyor is not the way.

You might consider used-hybrid fabric and/or steel cord to keep the cost competitive.

Only Use Hydraulics When You're In Trouble.

As Larry mentioned, the conveyor concept is a bit of a non starter and a bridge is also out of the question. If you can lay a pipe trench and 'pig' the water out during idle winter periods you might just do it. The 4 degrees maximum density should help you. If the spring thaw is as severe as suggested then you would have to provide a deep trench. How to dewater would be your own affair. Its a lot of trouble for 1100 tpd or about 45tph. The pipe would be reassuringly small and no more than Sch40 or, better still, polymer.

Have you considered a dredge (sand) pump and pumping sand suspended in water in a pipe line?

How To Cross 500m River

Thank you for your replies.

The Frac Sand is completely dry the after processing and would be driven 25 miles to the Conveyor site to cross the river. So re wetting and then drying would be an added cost we didn't really think of yet. I was able to talk with Larry the other day he is a wealth of knowledge and has given me some other options.
