New Models 2006

LHM 600 – cranes for a new age

The new LHM 600 enters the future as professional cargo handling asks for ever-growing turnover rates and lifting capacities. Designed for versatile and efficient cargo handling up to superpost-panamax-sized vessels the following model’s upscale fittings make the LHM 600 the manufacturer’s flagship product:

In general a substantial number of components is taken over from Liebherr’s most popular crane models LHM 320, 400 and 500 assuring the prompt availability of spare parts without any restrictions. Also approved design principles from the system family were kept. For example the compact undercarriage with its unique mobility (allowing the turning of its wheel sets up to 135°), a star-shaped stabiliser arrangement and the hydraulic suspension. The glass-fibre reinforced construction for the slewing platform cover, which is perfectly suited for its operation in harsh maritime conditions is as well a principle our customers rely on as the tension cylinder for more safety during operation and less corrosion. The very successful modular system in the different designs of the undercarriage (wheel sets, supporting pads etc.) and in terms of winch configurations, which has been standard since the mid 90s, is of course self-evident for the new LHM 600 even now with a greater spectrum. Also in the electronic sector Liebherr looks back on years of experience. In particular the “Cycoptronic®” antisway control system and the “Litronic®” crane management system have been proving their worth for several years. These electronic components were specially adapted and enhanced for the LHM 600 to increase handling performance and turnover rates.

The development of the LHM 600 accompanies the development of superpost-panamax vessels as well as the specialisation for particular applications. With a capacity of 208t under hook, a maximum outreach of 58m and a 2 x 670 kW power pack especially for bulk operation the LHM 600 is the most powerful crane available in the market and therefore sets new standards in the mobile harbour crane sector. Even more it is possible to enlarge the load moment by more than 10% (S-version) with a reinforcement of the steel structure, critical components and extra counterweight.

Another new design feature is the 4 chord boom for more stability. Furthermore, the LHM 600 provides a remote control to assure highest flexibility and facility for the change of lifting attachments.

The LHM 600 is the right solution for all cargo handling needs. Optimal adaptation on all costumer requirements is provided by tower elongation, optional e-drive and of course also portal as well as floating unit solutions as an alternative to the conventional undercarriage concept.

Concerning environmental issues all Liebherr mobile harbour cranes can be run on bio diesel, complying with certain ports transition using alternative fuels in their equipment fleet. In addition Liebherr in collaboration with AVIA developed biodegradable oil especially for its own product line.

The LHM 600 combines present needs with future requirements. The result is a machine that is offering unique handling opportunities aside from outstanding comfort and global service network. The first machine was purchased by Hyundai Steel Company for its steel handling applications at Inchon, Korea; a second machine has just been handed over to TPS Tarragona, a key customer for Liebherr in Spain. Equipped with 2 x 72t winches, 2 x 670 kW power packs and additional filters this mobile harbour crane is a specialist for bulk operation, rated up to 2500 tph in coal handling.

Details of orders 2006

In 2006 Liebherr gained orders for 70 mobile harbour cranes. We want to point out the following selected deliveries:

Europe – 31 units

Although various regions are catching up, Europe still remains the most important market for mobile harbour cranes. In 2006 Liebherr could write down 31 units in its order books with the following breakup: Top selling countries – again - were Spain and UK/Ireland, which are traditionally very good markets for Liebherr, each with 5 delivered units. Netherlands is next with 4 units while Ukraine, Russia and Germany accounted for 3 orders each.

LHM 400 - BEGA Stevedoring Company - Lithuania

On the 12th of May 2006 the Liebherr group has officially opened a brand new factory for maritime han-dling equipment in Rostock in the Port of Rostock on the German Baltic Coast. The new factory contains workshops and administration buildings and provides ideal logistic preconditions for the distribution of Liebherr’s comprehensive port equipment range, including harbour mobile cranes and reachstackers. During the opening ceremony of the new factory Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH, the purchase of a new crane Liebherr LHM 400 including grab facilities was set by Isolde Liebherr and the general director of the BEGA Stevedoring Company, Mr. Aloyzas Kuzmarskis. The new production plant in Rostock plays an important role for the continuing growth and the strengthening of the international market position of Liebherr’s branch of “maritime cranes”.

3 x LPS 530 – L.I.T.A.T. - Ukraine

In April 2006 Liebherr could announce the delivery of 3 portal slewing cranes to the L.I.T.A.T. Group, a specialist in exporting steel to the Middle East and South Africa. These LPS 530, operated at the Port of Avlita/Ukraine, are equipped with 2 x 60t winches, especially designed for dedicated bulk handling and feature electric drives for shore supply.

South America – 14 units

In 2006 Latin America was one of the key markets for Liebherr. This fact is illustrated by the supply of no less than 14 mobile harbour cranes (12 brand new units plus 2 second-hand machines). The fleet of Latin American units is mainly used for container handling to cope with the constantly rising containerisation of goods. For such reason crane purchasers are also entirely focusing on Liebherr’s crane models designed for the handling of panamax and post-panamax vessels. Martin Längle, regional sales manager for the Latin American market is delighted about the most recent entries into Liebherr’s order book: “The recent boost in LHM crane orders is probably the most impressive testimonial of our continuous market penetration via our regional sales office in Sao Paulo. With the current 14 orders deriving from the Latin American region, 2006 definitely is a benchmark for our future sales ambitions.”

India – 10 units

India currently has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Not only to increase their handling capacities, but also to establish a close and long lasting partnership, many port operators are turning to Liebherr technology and service. With the selling of 10 cranes in 2006 Liebherr has further boosted its excellent market position on the Indian subcontinent. Since entering the market in 2004, Liebherr has already delivered more than 20 mobile harbour cranes to India, making it the clear market leader on the Indian subcontinent.

LHM 500 - Port of Vancouver - USA

In August 2006 the US Port of Vancouver made international news when the largest mobile harbour crane in North America was officially commissioned for service. "This heavy lift crane brings a whole new dimension for cargo handling in the Columbia River, positioning Vancouver as a premier project cargo port," said Alastair Smith, port senior director of marketing and operations. The crane weighs close to 500 tons, has a tower height of 116.5 feet, and a boom length of 174 feet. The crane is powered by a 12-cylinder MAN diesel engine and is biodiesel-compatible, complying with the port's transition to using alternative fuels in its equipment fleet.

South Korea – 4 units

In March 2006 Liebherr-Werk Nenzing reported a contract with Korea’s Hyundai Steel Company in Inchon for three LHM 500 mobile harbour cranes and one LHM 600. All the cranes have been supplied with a number of motor grabs and 4-rope grabs to assure highest flexibility for handling scrap, various bulk cargoes and general cargo. Attachments being supplied include an 18m orange peel grab and lifting magnets. The LHM 600 is a 4-rope crane with two 104t winches and has a maximum lift of 208t up to 18m outreach.

That was a good description of the Liebherr Nenzing products' optional. Do you have more info about the current optionals that can be obtained with a new LHM from Nenzing?
