Truck loading dust problem

We currently load bulk trucks from our silos through a chute. The chute is in effect a pipe chute that can be lowered through the hatch of the truck where the material is unloaded. The material is granulated sugar. The chute is lowered in the truck only six inches under the hatch , which means that the granulated sugar freefalls to the bottom of the trucks and dust is created. SSince there is an opening between the hatch and the chute , the dust escapes massively out to the atmosphere. We have tried many things ,like dust collection on the other hatches on the truck or dust collection around the area , or using a skirt on the chute. But we haven,t found any solution that would suit our needs. Has anybody solved this type of problem ? If so please advise .Thank you. David

Please provide the geometry from bin bottom, above the truck to truck opening, hatch opening, and drop distance inside truck.

I think I may have a good solution for you. It may require redesign of you hopper outlet and fitting to truck hatch.

Truck Loading Dust Problem.

David,

I became aware a few days ago of a device simply called "Dust Suppression Hopper". I saw a video of it loading an open truck with fertilizer and virtually NO dust. The video also showed stockpiling of fertilizer, the material falling several metres and again, practically dust free.

The device looks like a funnel suspended under the head of a shuttle conveyor. There seem to be internal arrangements which control the flow and direct it into a confined continuous stream without entraining any air, much like the water flow from a slow running tap.

Whatever, it seems to work!

I have developed a flow hopper device which has been used on fertiliser products in New Zealand with great success to reduce dust by about 90%. In about two weeks this unit will be tried on sugar in Australia and is being tested by the University of Woollongong to see what other products it will work with. We will have a web site running shortly, about 2-3 weeks, running under DSH Systems Ltd. Should you want to contact me my email address is tschwass@xtra.co.nz. or our Australian contact is Simon Thomas at simonthomasfh@hotmail.com.

Dear David,

We have pleasure to inform you that we are manufacturing speciality chemicals for various industrial applications. We have Dust Suppression products range 'DUSTRON' for the DUST SUPPRESSION in mining operation for haulage road in open cast mines and for the bulk material handling systems.

We have a Memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Central Mining Research Institute (CMRI) Dhanbad, India which is a part of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research Govt. of India. CMRI is the world recognised Institute for the research in the field of mining operation.

The following products are approved and accepted by the Indian Mining Industries since last 10 years for better environmental and mining conditions.

1. DUSTRON PC Compound: For the open cast mines haul road where the dust emission is because of HEAVY EARTH MOVERS of high capacity trucks Dozzer, Tippler etc. DUSTRON PC is used for various class of mines in India for dust suppression in the mines as under.

(1) Iron Ore Mines

(2) Zinc Mines

(3) Lime Stone Mines

(4) Copper/Chromite Mines

2.DUSTRON PC COAL : For the open cast mines haul road of collieries, railway sidings and coal jetty's road of the ports.

3.DUSTRON PC LIGNITE : For the haulage roads of lignite open cast mines.

4.DUSTRON XT : This product is used for the dust suppression of bulk material handling system where at the transfer point crusher house, dumper platform dust emission is heavy, so along with water spray DUSTRON XT is used to control dust emission.

5.DUSTRON XT COAL : For bulk material handling system of conveyors, dumper platform, wagon tipplers of open cast/ under ground mines, Thermal power plants and coal jetty on the port trust.

All the above products are used in Indian mining industries to control dust for better environment & working conditions which produce no. of advantages.

We hope that you might be consuming some product for similar application. "Using DUSTRON RANGE OF PRODUCT SAVINGS IN WATER is 40%" with other benefits.

If you find any interest we shall send you the detail literature for your reference along with quotation.

We request you to send us your e-mail address to contact you on net.

E-mail: nrd@juno.com

We ensure you to provide you best services and technical back-up to your mines for dust suppression applications.

Awaiting for your valued inquiry.

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully

Hello David, We may be able to help you as we can contain the dust while bulk loading in a tight free-falling column and we have installations in sugar silos. Please contact us at info@dshsystems.com so we can discuss your requirements. www.dshsystems.com

Hello David,

As stated by Mr. Nordell, it is essential to see the geometry / schematic sketch showing sugar loading from hopper outlets to trucks before giving specific reply.

However for general information canvas type telescopic chute can be one option which will eliminate the dust leakage into atmosphere. An operator standing at appropriate place with pendant or remote control can control the discharge height to keep the free fall height bare minimum, say 1 foot etc. Possibly a sensor at outlet can also monitor the height automatically, with manual intervention when necessary for continued loading.
