Damaged steel cord belting

Posted in: , on 11. Mar. 2005 - 03:30

Hi,

A client has a steel cord belt ST4500 1800mm wide, it has been in service for 11 years.

The belting has sustained damage to the top cover side due to the collapase of vee return rolls - this has created cuts and grooves in the centre section of the belting and in some incidents the cuts extend down to the cords.

The belt is in servicable conditions and has only 5 major events where there are damaged cords - the largest has 8 damaged cords - these events are most probably due to impact damage.

It still has the original splices and one recent splice all in good condition.

My question is how to repair the centre grooving.

Have attempted hot repair but the ingressed moisture hampers the repairs due to the vapour created when the press is heated.

has anyone used cold repair material i.e Eli-flex or T2 with sucess?

Or is there a way that hot repairs can be carried out?

To further complicate the request any material utilised must be FRAS - i.e Flame resistant Anti-static.

Suggestions?

Belt Damage

the belt should be seen by naked eye and then only any suggestion could be given

i dont think solution can be provided therotically

belt damage occurs due to various reasons

11 years is not only the point but the particular belt logged how many hours is also required

points to be noted generally

a)damage to the covers

2)damage to the cords

3)application and service conditions

4)belt maintanance factors

5) finally the present belt sample should be tested for the present condition and to verify any residual life can be obtained if it is reconditioned now

Damaged Steel Cord Belt

The belt can be repaired but to assess how best to repair it it needs to be inspected. As it FRAS I have to presume it is the NSW or Qld coal fields and is most probably a drift conveyor. Using cold curing compounds is NOT an option as they do not comply to the FRAS requirements. Further at best such repairs are cosmetic in such an application. In the worst case scenario where you have many broken cables it may be best to re-splice the belt at this location. Have you scanned the belt to accurately assess how many cables are broken and the actual extent of all the damage?

The techniques used to do the permanent repairs will follow a manufacturer's guidelines as material compatibility is also critical for FRAS belt.

Hope this helps, if you need further advice email me at colin.benjamin@gcsm.com.au

I have just noted your concern re moisture and find this difficult to understand with a steel cord belt unless there is moisture in the cables. If this is the case special precautions will be necessary but it is not like fabric belts where this problem is far more vexatious. Given the width and belt spec I can pretty accurately guess where this belt is. Given this I am reluctant to advise further unless you have had the damaged assessed and the report is available.

Thanks

Eli-Flex Repair

Hi Mechnique,

Thanks for the forum posting.

Although you have been advised not to consider cold repairs, I can't imagine any other viable way of repairing your damage.

Whilst it is true that T2 and Eli-Flex are not FRAS rated, it needs to be pointed out that T2 contains trichloroethylene which is a proven carcinogen.

see T2 MSDS at :

http://www.rema.com/beta/MSDSFile/R...AB2002V1.pdf

Eli-Flex is formulated completely free of solvents, or any other flammable substance. It comprises 100% polyurethane solids.

See Eli-Flex MSDS at :

www.elichem.co.uk/eliflex.htm

Eli-Flex is tested and rated at IEC 707 FV2 flammability which means it will not self-ignite or catch fire in the presence of open flame. It is also non-static.

We have not applied for FRAS in the past due to the relatively low turnover in the applications requiring that certification.

Eli-Flex has a strong success rate in steel-cord repairs. Kenecott Copper and Phelps dodge Henderson in the U.S.A are notable examples. Please see the other .pdf case studies on our website.

Kind Regards,
