Oxide Pellet Bin Level Measurement
The best device for measurement on this type of product is to use a non contact level system, due to wear and loading of any cable based devices (and possibly temperature in some applications).
Traditionally this has been with ultrasonic 'sound based' measurement, however this is a very dusty product and this can readily cause problems with the sound signal. The latest development is in microwave radar technology, and it is in use at several Corus steel plants in the UK on similar products. This unit is VEGAPULS 68.
Please go to the website : http://www.vega.com/epoche/indexen.htm this explains how and why this technology is the best for these type of products.
For an application story about how the radar overcomes dusty conditions go to this UK website http://www.vegacontrols.co.uk/vegan....asp?newsID=99
Hope this helps

Oxide Pellet Bin Level Measurement
I agree that a non-contacting technology offers the lowest life cycle cost, the easiest installation, requires the least maintenance, and generally is less problematic than contacting technologies; however there are too many application variables that are not answered in this question to determine which technology will perform best.
Ultrasonics and Radar each have their strengths and weaknesses. Vessel dimensions, temperature, acousitcal noise, dust concentration, process connection, and equipment costs are important variables that should be considered before applying a "one size fits all" approach.
Measuring solid materials with angle of repose and uneven surfaces is much more difficult than measuring the flat surface of liquids. When selecting a vendor to supply your measuring device choose a company with proven application knowledge and multiple technologies to insure customer satisfaction. According to the Vendure Develpment Corporation's August 2005 Report titled " North American Process Level Measuement and Inventory Tank Gauging Markets", Siemens-Milltronics supplies 60.7% of all non-contacting Radar level devices for solids measurement in North America and 55.7% of all Ultrasonic level devices for solids measurement in North America. Siemens has proven technologies and the proven ability to make the tough level measurements. Let us put our knowledge to work for you. We stand behind our products with the best warranties in the business and our performance guarantee.

Re: Oxide Pellet Bin Level Measurement
Dear Sajeev,
Generally I would suggest to use a non contact radar system for this application. But be careful when you select a sensor for this application. It have to be a Radar which is designed to measure solids.
Please have a look at the homepage of VEGA under www.vega.com. Here you will find some interesting examples and articles about the level measurement of solids with radar and the advantages of this measurement principles.
If you need any assistance please contact our sales partners in your country they can have a closer look at the application and can suggest the best solution.

Reliable Level Measuring
New-generation ultrasonic devices use high power, low frequency sound and adaptive gain control to handle tough applications like this that older devise cannot. These products have been very successful measuring a wide variety of metal, from powdered aluminum to sinter. They have been used for iron oxide pellets in the East USA with great success. Dust, angles of repose, and varying particle sizes are no problem. For more information, I invite you to visit www.echosonix.com or call me direct.
